Hello everyone!

1. Is it possible to get the Iron Collar mercenaries to get up off their rears? The manual has two paragraphs suggesting (at least to me) that you could:

"Charisma Based Skills: Charisma-based skills, like Bluff, Intimidate, and Diplomacy, will allow you to
reap greater financial rewards from quests in Targos as well as short-circuit some quests simply by persuading
people to let you do things “your way.” You won’t lose any experience by doing things this way - in fact,
you’ll be rewarded for using your Charisma-based skills to bend the quests you encounter to your will.

Stubborn NPCs: Some of the folk in Targos are as stubborn as a mule. If you can’t get them to help you, or
if you can’t convince them of something, you may want to switch to a high Charisma or Intelligent character
and let them do the talking." (Page 34)

I could never get them to leave during the initial goblin invasion (the one at the docks). Only during the second goblin attack I'm able to convince them.

2. Is it possible to compensate the woman who owns the shop in town? When you get to the warehouse there is a dialogue option that says you'll do that. But I think I might've missed it every time I get to her.

I've played the beginning, however:

1. I did not encounter any sort of mercenaries. Also, there are no skills in the game. I also don't remember any docks for there to be a goblin invasion. (I remember there being goblins, but they weren't at any sort of dock.)

2. I don't remember any sort of warehouse.

Maybe you forgot to mention which game you are referring to? (Since you didn't specify, I assumed the original Icewind Dale.)

He's describing Icewind Dale 2.

On topic, I've never been able to talk the Iron Collar mercenaries into getting up off their butts until given the mission to get them on garrison duty. Don't know about compensating the merchants; I saw that dialog option too, but didn't take it. I can't presume it would be very much money, since non-magical arrows are ridiculously cheap in D&D (1 GP for 10 arrows).

The first time you speak with them they will not leave no matter what you say. At the palisade, Shawford will tell you to get them to report for duty "no matter what". It's up to you how you handle them after that.

No, you can't. It's just dialog fluff.
Thanks guys!
