In IWD 1, after doing the prologue quests in Easthaven and leaving with Hrothgar, the game suddenly... stops. It does not physically crash or freezes, it just stops doing anything. The loading screen comes up and my party just stands there. There is an NPC which, I think, is supposed to walk up to me and initiate a conversation, but he just stands there watching us. All my buttons are greyed out and I have to use alt-F4 to end the game (so it is still responding - I assume it's just waiting for the NPC to approach me. But he doesn't do that).

I seem to recall that you had to switch CD's in the original game, maybe this is what's causing this problem? Has anyone else experienced this, and more importantly, could solve it?

I've not experienced this and have it installed and running on a Win7 64 bit machine. Are you on Win7 as well? If so:

Are you running as admin? If not, try that. If so, is the game installed in a folder other than Programs or Programs(x86). I highly recommend installing outside these folders. Somewhere such as C:\Games.
Sorry, could have given more information, my bad :-)

I run Vista 32-bit. Running it as admin didn't solve anything, and the game is installed - just like all my games - in c:\games.

I seem to recall a cutscene after leaving Easthaven. Isn't that when Chapter 1 begins? In any case, I don't get any cutscenes or story updates, it just shows a loading screen and then my party and the NPC by the bridge standing idle.

Thanks for the reply, though. :-)

Did you try to uninstall the game and re-install it?
It works sometimes, at least it solved my problem years back ago on other title.
I am fairly sure now that there should be a movie after leaving Easthaven, to show what happens to the caravan. Can anyone confirm that? I think the game pauses for playing the movie, but since the movie is never played I'm stuck in an infinite pause. I think that is the problem.

When I bring up the movie list from the game menu, the movie is not in the list. I'll try to reinstall (backing up save files) and see if that solves anything.

EDIT: Yes, after some research, I found "Avalanche at Kuldahar pass" is the movie that should be playing. But it doesn't play, so the game is stuck in a pause. Hoping a reinstall fixes it...

Sorry for the delay. Yes, that's the movie that plays after leaving Easthaven. You officially start Chapter 1 at that point. Hopefully a reinstall should clear it up.

Yep, it was what I suspected. After reinstalling and reinstating my save files, the movie started and the game went on.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I marked wongheiming's reply about reinstalling as the solution, as that was closest by :-)
