I simply cannot get this game to run. I have tried just about every suggestion on the forums to no avail. I assume it has something to do with my ATI 5700 cards, but I am not sure. I use win 7 on a 64 bit machine, so I know others have gotten it to work. Planescape and BG1 worked immediately with no issues.

Any help or suggestions correcting similiar issues is appreciated.

I am using a 5670 on Vista 64 and no problems. Try installing it to a non default directory. I see you mention cards (2) maybe that is setting it off. Anyone else running with two cards gotten it to work?
I do install the games to a C:/Games directory. Sorry that was a typo, this is a fairly new rig running one (1) ATI Radeon HD 5700 card.

Have you been installing mods of any kind upon install, before you run the game? If you do this, chances are the game will be prone to crashing, regardless of install location. Try running it once without mods, if this is the case.
The subject line of this existing thread is perfect -- it just stopped working! The only thing between last night when I quit playing and now is running a quick virus scan. No new installs or anything like that.

Just needed to vent! I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling but since I am insane (doing the same thing over and over expecting different results) I will uninstall and reinstall againg. Grr.

(Running Win7 64-bit but had it working dammit().

Have you tried :

- installing into a different directory ?

- right click the shortcut and select open

or

- bypass the shortcut and run IDMAIN.EXE directly
Well, I have yet to get the game to work. I continually get the, "Icewind Dale has stopped working" message. I have clicked an unclicked just about every setting in properties and the config. I have it installed in a separate directory along with BG1 and Planescape. I have set the resolution of my ATI 5700 to match one of the game's setting, as well.
@saltydog - dig your handle. Sorry to hear you can't get it to work. I finally got it to work (prior) by installing in c:\ and using the 640x480 resolution. None of the run as admin or compatibility modes worked for me. Weird. (Also I am using the OpenGL not the BLT).

Now my problem is that it won't "stretch" across my 23" monitor. I had it working at 800x600 resolution and it was looking fine. Now it has black bars on each side and probably isn't even 19" wide. Every combination of switching resolution, switching from windowed to full screen, even the wide screen monitor mod won't get it back to "normal." I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times.

I finally put it on my XP partition to play for awhile but I want it to work again under win7 like it was. Ah the joys of PC gaming.
I too have encountered the same problem as saltydog. I have windows 7 and am getting the exact same messages. I have not even been able to see a start screen. Installation seemed to go fine and i have uninstalled and installed with antivirus and firewalls off. I did just buy this laptop in September of 2012 and i just do not have any clues as what to do. I want my money back honestly because like saltydog i expected to be able to play a game i enjoyed years ago and have paid my hard earned money so i could do just that. Any help would be appreciated.

I assume when you reinstalled, you installed outside of the programs(x86) directory (ie C:\Games\Icewind Dale)
The DirectX SDK is a big download, but it can fix problems with old games that used older DirectX files.

Also, any video codex you have added, can cause the opening video to crash.
