I am wondering if the same BG 1 and BG Enhanced Edition mechanic where elves get a +1 to thaco for longswords and all 1 handed swords (short swords, scimitars, etc.) works in Icewind Dale 1 as well. I know that longswords give a thaco bonus but do scimitars, short swords and other 1 handed swords get it as well. They did in bg and so Im asking because it might save the day.
Elves get bonuses with longswords and bows. IIRC they did not get bonuses with scimitars and shorts swords.
Are those bonuses even applied in IWD1? I seem to recall reading somewhere that although they're supposed to receive those bonuses, they actually don't in the game engine. Could be misremembering though.

As far as saving the day, the best way to do that is avoid taking an Elf at all. :P Anyway, just keep in mind that they can't be raised from the dead (it's only a full scale resurrection for them).
Unless I'm confusing with the BG games, I'm pretty sure I tested it out in IWD and that elves do get the bonuses.

I was asking if elves get the bonuses applied to Short swords, longswords, katanas and scimitars, etc. like they did in bg and bg EE. Im just asking as that would be wicked awesome if they did. I like to be able to choose which weapon I want for each play through.

I know that's what you're asking. And I answered that although I thought they were supposed to get the bonuses for longswords and bows only (I guess I wasn't clear about that), I thought I'd read that it actually doesn't work in-game. But Petrus addressed that.

My other comment was somewhat facetious. I'm not a fab of elves, so tend to avoid using them and the fact they can't be raised just makes them more of a pain in the ass in IWD.
Okay, I created an Elf Mage/Thief.in IWD1. He had dexterity 19 and proficiency in bows.

I then made a Half-elf mage/thief with dexterity 18 (also with proficiency in bows) and compared the two.

The elf has a THAC0 of 16, while the half-elf has a THAC0 of 18, so it would seem that the elven racial bonus is applied in IWD1

Edit: My initial post was incorrect - sorry for any inconvenience.

I was rather surprised to see that they had exactly the same THAC0 (=20).

I would have expected the Elf to have a THAC0 that was two points lower than the half-elf - one point from the +1 racial bonus to Bows & Longsword, and one point from the Dexterity 19.

Anyone who can explain this?
That's weird. With 18-19 Dex they should have had lower THAC0 than that. Did you have arrows equipped as well?

Also Mage/Thieves can only use Short Bows, and it's possible Elves get the +1 bonus only from Long Bows, just like they only get the bonus from Long Swords and not Short Swords.
Sorry, seems I was wrong...I think it might have been because I hadn't equipped any arrows (as you pointed out)

Oh, and the elven racial bonus works for short bows as well!
