I enabled cheats in the configuration but pressing ctrl+tab and typing in the cheats I knew for this game doesn't seem to work. All it does in return is say 'nice try cheater!' but nothing is actually changed.

What's the problem? If there's going to be an option to enable to cheats in the configuration, it would be nice if they'd work...however, none of them seem to. The ctrl+key cheats do nothing, and the typed cheats only return 'nice try cheater!'

Any help is appreciated.

You are probably trying to use cheats for vanilla IWD. Cheats for HoW/TotL are a bit different. Check it here

They do work. But the command code is:

GETYOURCHEATON

Not CHEATERSDOPROSPER
