My English isn't quite good like the others here... so I'll try to be short and do my best to describe my predicament in detail....

I'm a at Dragon's Eye and I've just given the sword to Mandal and he already directed me to the location of the Modified Mandrake Root which is on the cave where the ancient wyvern resides... So when I arrive there, the Modified Mandrake Root was nowhere to be found at it's usual place...

This is the first time that has happen to me- i never encounter any problems playing the CD version Icewind Dale II on my previous playthroughs decades ago... until today while playing the GOG.com version of Icewind Dale II...

I'm really at a lost here?! I don't know what to do next since there's nothing to patch for this version of the game because is already updated and all... the IWD II GOG version is very good indeed- having included the adventure's pack that adds those nice new items in stores from Nym and that Dwarf in underdark and playing without the CDs XD... though I haven't encounter any problems like the others are saying here except for this one... The missing Modified Mandrake Root....

Ahhh.... Am I encountering this problem because of my party composition? Because currently I'm using only 4 party members which include's a Sorceress/Fighter, a Paladin, A Rogue/Bard and a Cleric of Imater??

Whereas before I played as having 6 full party members and never encounter any problems or glitch in the entire game... and Also I'm playing the game in heart of winter difficulty mode

I'm using a Windows 7 32-bit OS and I always run Icewind Dale II as an administrator whenever I play the game....

Aside from everything I don't what else to do?!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! Dear good people of GOG.com :)
I'm out of ideas already :(

I' can't complete the game without finishing this quest first and at best being stuck in Dragon's Eye for eternity which isn't a nice situation XD

Just to be clear: did you go back up to level 1 of Dragon's Eye and from that level you entered the Ancient Wyvern's lair? If so and still no root anywhere, you can spawn it in using the game console. To do so, you'll need to hit CTRL+TAB to open the console. Your cursor will now be in the 'chat' or 'information' window at the bottom of the screen. Type in the following:

ctrlaltdelete:createitem("61GENMM")

exactly as I have it there. Then hit Enter twice. This will spawn the item into your lead character's inventory and you should have no issues moving on from there. Post back if this doesn't work for you, as you may need to turn the console on in the game's configuration (but I think it's on by default).

Yes I went up again where I killed the big Wyvern and found nothing... no mandrake!? very unusual because this is the first time that had happen to me as I play the GOG version of IWDII but....
Hmm... alright I"ll try it out... thanks for replying :)
if I may ask... is there no other way to fix this problem? do I really need to use the console?!
I completed the game without using it or having the knowledge that a actual console exist in the game?
and I somehow considering using consoles as cheats which really spoils the fun!

Just saying :)

OHHHHH............. IT WORK!!!!!!!!! it just appear my inventory the moment I type those codes.... thank you so much good sir :)

ahh did you also encounter the same problem while playing?
Did you follow Mandal and watch the cut scene, where he shows you he threw it over the rocks? The modified mandrake root does not appear until after that cut scene.

No, that's never happened to me. I've played through the GOG version at least 6 times as well. Likely just an odd glitch, or as Hickory pointed out, perhaps you missed the cut scene?

Anyway, hopefully there won't be any issues for the rest of your game.

Hickory: Did you follow Mandal and watch the cut scene, where he shows you he threw it over the rocks? The modified mandrake root does not appear until after that cut scene.
Yes... I followed him all along the way since that's what normally happens whenever you give him his sword back and he keeps of rambling words while at it XD!!!

And also yes... after the cutscene- as I went back to the Ancient wyvern lair... I don't see any modified mandrake root around the usual spot where it should appear?!

I tried doing this a lot of times. restarting my PC and play the game again, I even play the start over again the quest on Dragon Eye from the beginning- And I'm still having the same problem... what a complete waste of time!!!

So are there any other ways to handle this problem aside from fixing it via console like forcing the modified mandrake to appear on your inventory since trying to patch it is really out of the question as it is really on it's latest update including the adventurers pack and some nice new items on store?!

Well, I can assure you that it is not the GOG version that is at fault. It is the version I have, and I have never come across this issue. Do you have any mods installed? Whether or not you do, do you have any other miscellaneous files inside your \override\ folder that are not put there by the installer? It might be worth a completely clean uninstal / reinstall of IWD, and play through with no mods or additions -- don't start from a previously saved game!

Sorry for the late reply, my internet connection is been messing up again....

Anyways....

I never used any mods or even the wide screen mod but I do make use of custom portraits for my characters in IWD II- is that consider as a Mod or something?

I did also tried uninstalling the game and re installing back. and it seems I still have the same issue...
Also I don't put any blame on GOG.com for any problems that I'm encountering now and I wouldn't dare since they one of few people who really cares about Old School games like this one and other decent PC games out there if you know what I'm saying :)
Perhaps i should just stick with Coelocanth advise then- at least i won't have to the game start all over again...
or could just start a new full six party from the very beginning and play it all the way through as I always did, hoping this glitch won't appear to haunt my game?!

Thank You for helping guys and may the Gods watch over you :)

No, custom portraits are not mods, at least not in the sense that they alter game content in your override folder -- they go in their own 'portraits' folder.

It's odd -- but not unheard of if you search Google for this issue -- that some people are plagued by this and others not. If a complete reinstall does not help, then I am really at a loss, considering the randomness of the problem. It's fortunate that the console exists, I suppose. :)
