On windows XP with Nvidia 9800 mGTX card I get very large black dialogue box when a character in game speaks with a "free floating" dialogue box which follows the character instead of talking directly to me as well as item info boxes (cursor turns to a ? ).

I have found a fix but it involves disabling my graphics card manually every time I play the game and re-enabling it when done. I was hoping that there is a more permanent solution.

The fix is:
1- Open start menu, select Run and enter "dxdiag' (without the ' ). This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
2- Select Display.
3- Disable DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration.
4- Re-enable all three when finished playing or else programs/games using these features will not work.

(NOTE: I have tried changing every graphics option in the in-game menu, none of which worked)

Not necessary. Open the icewind config utility, and just set the video to OpenGL mode.
Gawh! I didn't think to check for such a utility.

It works and tanks. :)
Either I can't find right config utility or mine doesn't have category "video" with "Open GL mode" option.

Wherever you installed the game, there should be a Config app in the main Icewind Dale folder. Run it. It will bring up a window with 4 tabs: General, Game, Keyboard, and Graphics. The OpenGL option is at the upper right in the Graphics tab.
Weird. I'm in the "Icewind Dale II Configuration Utility". But there are 3 tabs only: General, Game and Graphics. There is nothing in the upper right corner of the Graphics tab. There are sections for "resolution" , "game options", "2D color depth", "window mode", "movie options", "tile options", and "2D 16-bit color BLT modes". Nothing about "Open GL" on any tab and there's no "Keyboard " tab at all.

Ah, that's because the OP was talking about IWD 1, not IWD2.
OK. Alrighty then. What about IW II? Same problem as with IW I.
So what is the solution for iwd2? im having the same problem.
I'm having the same problem with IW2.

I'm having the same problem with IWD2 but that DDraw link wouldn't work for me, and there's nothing on the NVIDIA website. Happen to know anywhere else to find it?

Try accessing the link from This post. Seems to work for me that way.
I applied the patch and it fixed the problem for me! Thanks!
