Hi there, I have a problem with IWD2. I downloaded it the other day and it will not run. Clicking on the icon eventually shows a pop-up window saying "Icewind Dale II has stopped working" and "Windows is looking for a solution to this problem." It then states that Windows is unable to find a solution to this problem without stating what the problem is or anything like that.

I have looked through the various threads before and I've tried patching, reinstalling IWD2 and downloading DirectX and turning the hardware accelerator off like one post suggests. None of these solutions have worked.

The computer I am using is a little strange, my local computer repair shop had to combine two Acer Aspire laptops together after my original computer stopped working due to overheating. If I remember rightly, our original computer was a 5255 and they used components from a 5750.

BG1 & BG2 work fine though.

Cheers

If you installed in Programs or Programs (x86), then install outside of that folder. Win7 has some heavier protections on those folders. Install to somewhere such as C:\Games. As well, run the installer as admin and the game in compatability mode for WinXP.
Already done those things.

[EDIT]
Sorry for the terse reply, but I was going out. I did try the administrator idea again, however, it was not successful. Thank you for the suggestion though.

I decided to have another check of game, see if there was anything that turned up. When right clicking on IWD2 icon I get a tab which says Troubleshoot compatibility issues. Clicking on this has eventually led me to Display Problems where the computer says that "Program does not display properly when large scale font settings are selected". Windows then provided a solution and then asks me to run the program. It then produced a window stating "An Assertion failed in Chitin.cpp at line number 1738. Programmer says: Error initializing key table, bad key file."

Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Not sure on that one. Have you done anything to your font settings (as noted in the troubleshooting)?

Some mods will physically alter the IWD program executable. What mods do you have installed -- post your weidu.log here.

Edit: Also, please state which version of the game you have, and if you have patched, or attempted to patch it -- the GOG version should not be patched.

In response to people.

Coelcanth, I've not played around with any font settings as far as I am aware. When I set up the game, I tried to do so, as was suggested by various sites.

Hickory, here is the Weidu
// Log of Currently Installed WeiDU Mods
// The top of the file is the 'oldest' mod
// ~TP2_File~ #language_number #component_number // [Subcomponent Name -> ] Component Name [ : Version]
~DDRAWFIX/DDRAWFIX.TP2~ #0 #2 // DDrawFix -> Use WineD3D's DDraw Library: v1.0
~NVIDIA_FIX/NVIDIA_FIX.TP2~ #0 #0 // Fix NVidia graphical glitches
Please note though that these mods were installed because it wasn't running.

If you had zero mods installed when it wasn't working, and you were getting the Chitin.cpp assertion error, that probably means that there is a problem with your Chitin.key file. That being said, you will need to completely uninstall and re-install the game.
Which I tried several times. I will try uninstalling the mods and then reinstalling IWD2 with the compatibility change later, see how it works.
I've managed to find the mod I need and IWD2 works now. Thanks for all the help.
