I have recently returned to a game in progress of Ice Wind Dale after some time. As I enter Chapter 5, I have many inventory items from questing, such as Terikan's Key or Joril"s badge. Can I drop this stuff, or will I need it later on for some purpose?
Second related question: are there any safe stashes anywhere in the game where I can store things to pick up if needed later?
One does acquire many items
going through the different caves, dungeons, etc.

Thanks
There are some items you want to keep. Those are squirrels, water, and a few other things that are needed for the restoration side quest. You can store items in any chest, and it will stay there indefinitely. Do not store things in the expansion areas, because when you leave you won't be able to return. If you are paranoid about leaving something important behind (I'm paranoid about it too!), you can just put it in a box and come back for it later. There's a point where you will go back to Easthaven, and won't be able to get your stuff back. But when it comes to that you pretty much finished the game.

Yes. The Heart of Winter and Trial of the Luremaster expansions.

The area is called Lonelywood. You get there by going in to the house between the Temple of Ilmater and the Root Cellar tavern. You have to talk to the barbarian in the house.

Anytime!
Just to add to it. Badges are most important objects. Do not lose them! Other objects are optional as they are needed for completion of side-quests. But you need badges at some point to continue the main quest!
It's a old topic, but I always store all my things in the inn in Kuldahar. There are two containers, I use one for armors and weapons and the other for potions, gems, etc. Remember to store things of the same type up to 16 to sell them in one go (or else, the price drops) like yeti pelts, large shields (Verbeegs) and plate mails. Store the next 16 and sells them to the elf in the Severed Hand or another merchant.

Almost all containers are safe in the original game.
