This is tough for me. I've always been raised to say nice things. And I'm sure this game is *awesome* in that it was well done, and provides a level of realism. But why would you waste time renovating a house on the computer when you could literally be doing it on the house you're living in right now. I'm really torn on the fact that the game actually exists. It epitomizes wasting time.

Having just spent the past 2-3 years completely renovating two large homes from top to bottom, doing literally everything myself and having spent (unfortunately), nearly $120,000 in JUST supplies between Lowes and Home Depot. The last thing I want to do is spend time doing it on the computer with no actual outcome.

... also, if this doesn't include the proverbial 8 trips to Home Depot on Saturday because you keep forgetting to buy something, or you need just one more part... then it's not real.
I know a few reasons:

- because it's just a (relaxing) game? You can also join an army and shoot up people in real life, but this has no relation to playing Call Of Duty whatsover or says anything about the value of that game
- because game /= reality? It doesn't cost you any pysical effort to renovate or any real money other than the retail price of this game
- because you can expirement with ideas

Exactly. It's the last thing you want to do. Personally, I find it curious, that you felt the need to "waste your time" going all the way to the subforum for a game you (seemingly) don't ever want to play just to state your .... dislike? renovation skills?

The difference between life and games (for me at least):
Life is work, games are fun.
And on that note: Why would I want to renovate in real life, including sweating and everything, if I could test my creativity in a game like this?
People are different. People like different things.

Ugh... I know, I'm not trying to offend people. And I'm sure the developers are awesome.

I also know people are different, but I have a hard time understanding how it can be fun. It's like... "Prison Chain Gang Simulator" to me.

Renovations aren't really relaxing by any means, but that's cool. I was a bit bummed though when I saw them taking apart the outlet in the video. It certainly doesn't meet the NFPA/NEC standards. I don't even know what country uses that outlet or those colors... it's black (hot), white (neutral), and green (ground). ... sometimes red for the second hot in a 3-way switch. But I understand... again, not trying to be mean.

To answer your question "why would you want to renovate in real life?"

1 - 75% of renovation costs are labor, you'd literally save 75% on the cost of renovating your house.
2 - You can dramatically improve the equity and property value of your home.
3 - When it's done, you can actually live in it.

Well, there isn't anything to understand, really (in my opinion). It's just a game. :-)

I don't know about these things, but maybe they made the colour scheme up to avoid people trying things they "learned" from a game in real life or someting. And I understand being disappointed about something you know about being depicted differently/wrong in a game.

I'm aware of possible reasons to do all that in real life. I was just kind of reflecting your line of thought back to you (or trying to do that), but from my point of view: You wouldn't want to do that in a game and I wouldn't want to do that in real life.

My post wasn't meant to be offensive/aggressive either. I was just puzzled why you would bother posting at all. Now I think, it's (at least partly) because you were dissapointed, that it's not more in line with what you know from experience. I understand that disappointment. :-)
Well, one of the reasons we play games, is that they can make us feel like someone else.

For example, we play RPGs, to be a hero, to feel how is it to save the world (because we, most likely, will never be a monster-slaying, princess-saving one-man-army).

For me, this is the main reason why such simulators exist. Farming Simulators are (probably) played mostly by the city people, who never saw how the work of a farmer looks like... And House Flipper (again, probably) is played mostly by people who never had to do this in real life — to feel how is that to renovate houses.

Of course, it is a huge generalization. There are e.g. interior designers who play HF. Now, that's the people, who love their jobs :)

Nevertheless, I find these games pretty boring. I don't like manual labor, even the virtual ones :P But I understand these people.

If I'm being honest about it... I have multiple tests that I am supposed to be studying for. I'm thinking of / doing anything I can other than what I'm supposed to be doing... :/

That's actually an excellent point!

By the way, totally random, but I've been drinking (Gordon's Dry London Gin w/ Tonic water) so here we go with the verbal vomit...

I am very impressed with the diversity of countries being represented in this thread. I know GoG is owned by an EU company, but I expected more USA people here. I've been to Germany where FlockSchnee is from, been to Belgium (Brussles, Bruges, etc.) where Newbazoid is from... OMG, loved the monk beer, the Neutonium, and pretty much everything else. Never been to Poland though, always wanted to go... lots of really cool cathedrals there that I've never had the opportunity to see. I mean, being Catholic, I'd totally fit in. Been to Slovakia just below Poland... I just missed it every time I went. Next time I go to Europe... definitely going to visit Poland.

Throwing my hat in here; I see this as more a zen garden potentially. Of all things, I'll be moving into a newer house quite soon, which entails a lot of setup.
I like this game specifically because I personally suck at home renovation :) In the game, I can actually fix up a house and have it look good! In real life, I have a tough enough time just putting together furniture, much less installing sinks and bathroom tiles (although I'm pretty good at painting, but I'm also clumsy so get paint all over myself). :P

Now if you are good at home renovation, and enjoy it...then, yeah, this game is probably not something you would be interested in considering you could do the real thing :)
I'm not rich enough to have a house.
So I thank this game.
