So after a long hiatus, with the arrival of the new patch bringing both a launcher and windowed mode to Hotline Miami I am now unable to play the updated version.

I installed Hotline Miami and form the launcher I cannot play the updated version.

If I select original it launches and plays as normal.

If I select Updated , either windowed or not and then click start nothing happens, for a split second a window seems to appear but then nothing.

Is anyone else having this issue ?? Are the any solutions to getting the updated version running in windowed mode ??

I am on a dell laptop running 32 bit Vista,

Yep. Same here, windows 8.1, latest ATI drivers. I tried everything I could think of but it won't run. The only suggestions I find are saying it's due to onboard video except that isn't true about my PC. So I have no idea
Try running it as Administrator and with Compatibility mode (Win XP).

No dice :-\
I'm having the same issue; in fact, original mode crashes for me as well after showing the title. I can't open the updated game at all, it just goes to black and then nothing. If I try opening it in windowed mode, it does flash a window up, but that immediately disappears as well.
1. Update .NET Framework to 4.0
- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17851
- Reboot and run Windows Updates afterwards!
2. Uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redist Package
- For 64bit Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14632
- For 32bit Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555
- Reboot and run Windows Updates afterwards!
3. Reboot and check Windows Update again (there might be updates for the latest updates now)

Try running Hotline Miami (and also as administrator if it still crashes).

I had the same problem an at least on all the systems I have tested it will not run without downloading and installing OpenAL which is only normally found on systems with creative labs sound cards.

Downloading and installing the installer from here http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=548634 fixed the problem for me on both my Windows7 laptop and Windows 8 desktop.

It looks like GOG should really fix the installer as it missing files required to run this game or pull this game from download/purchase until they fix it :-(

Edit: fix typo's

Interesting info, I'd love to know if this works.

The inclusion of OpenAL into the GOG installer isn't that easy, because it's proprietary (by CreativeLabs).

@gog.com:
But maybe the Open Source branch OpenAL Soft will work as well (http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html#download). It's able to completely substitute OpenAL by renaming open source driver soft_oal.dll to OpenAL32.dll (just read the Readme that comes with it).

Well so far I have tested the current version of the installer (the only one I have) on 4 different Computers running, Windows Vista Business, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. All have upto date driver for the graphics cards and all relevant Microsoft updates installed, DirectX updated but without Creative Labs sounds card or OpenAL already installed, and I have not been able to run the game on any of them first downloading and installing OpenAL.

As such I would think a Creative Labs sound card including OpenAL really should be listed on the system requirements or a download load link supplied at the very minimum.

But if someone else can find a way of making this rather good game work without OpenAL I would also be interested in how to do that, as I would prefer not to be reliant on third party software to install and play this game in the future.

Something like this?

I assume that's a generic one.

Nice, that's new. Haven't seen it yet.
Looks like the original Creative OpenAL Installer.

Ah, OK. I didn't actually try it.
