Are you serious about the keylogging? Is there any way to permanently disable it?

I think it'd be better known if they were installing a system-wide keylogger. In many countries those are illegal anyway. Most likely they're reserving the right to look at key presses in crash logs.

A lot of T&Cs are pretty awful, but often it's a---covering by the legal department and not much more.

That said, if anyone has more info please post it. The problem with stuff like this is that it slips by, and then it gets worse, and then it's mainstream, and then when everyone wants to fight it it's too hard.

I was fairly annoyed when I first fired up the game and I tried to uncheck the tick on the full data collection box. The game understood that as a confirmation. If something like that ever went to a court I don't think the publisher would have a hope of winning, but it won't because there's no financial impairment.

I don't strongly oppose telemetry that logs if I'm running something that could affect the game, like ShadowPlay, but I don't want it saying I've got OneNote open and the window tile is "Project X", Vivaldi is open and the window tilte is "Page Y", and Outlook is open and the window title is "Email Z".

Yeah, so they say. But that's pure conjecture.

Exactly. I was really fired up by this game, but when I stumbled upon this post here, my enthusiasm dropped.

I do oppose telemetry, because there is simply too much of it. How the hell did devs create games 10-20 years ago when people just bought CD cases in stores with no you-have-to-log-into-our-bull$hit-account to be able to play. If they made a choice of sending or not sending the data, I would understand. But this here is spitting in the face of the gamer-consumer. They're pretty much saying: We don't give a $hit about you - just send us everything we want and stfu. I say f*** 'em!
Thank you for the warning about this... I was going to buy a copy but now I won't.
I was going to buy this on Steam and noticed the suspiciously ambigious clause that seems to suggest that they can download any data from any appp you run on your computer simultaneously with this game. I'm not happy to find out that it's here on GOG "The 100% DRM free" platform.

(I may be blind or stupid but) I can't even find a link to the EULA, TOS or Privacy Policy on the GOG store page. Do you have to buy and download the game to read the terms? At least I can read the terms on Steam before I buy a game. WTF, GOG?

Sad to see that this game has been review bombed by very smol pp always online neckbeards who are threatened by digitial representations of women, rather than voicing concerns about the ambiguous and open ended data collection terms.

you can always play the game offline so even if it does collect data, it won't be able to send it anywhere. Alternatively, you can also block in the firewall with the same effect.

This is what put me off buying the game as well. Practices like that should be condemned by the community and I'm a bit disappointed to see this game, with those mechanics included, was let on GOG.

The days gone devs patched in the ability to switch it off entirely and god of war comes with the option to disable it as well maybe if we continue to talk about it the horizon devs will make the option available.
Interesting. Most people have no problem to accept the terms presented on their new TV set... And let's face it, there are no new "smart" TVs that don't send telemetry!

The game does ask if you want to send basic or detailed telemetry, yes. But as stated already in this thread, the game will run happily when offline. And you don't need galaxy installed as well, just start the .exe from the installation folder.

Also, I highly doubt that there's a keylogger installed. All that it's saying is that keys will be send as well with the logs IN THE GAME, i.e. when an issue is logged, the devs want to look at what the player was doing, so they can reproduce and possibly fix the issue. This hardly qualifies as a keylogger, but it has to be mentioned for the telemetry consent. Anyhow, I cannot believe that they would install a system-wide keylogger and grab your banking login credentials... And that such an outrageous behavior HASN'T BEEN REPORTED already by mainstream media, if it were such an unethical keylogger.

So, no, the games telemetry is there, but it is reasonable and avoidable by means of playing offline entirely (just disconnect Windows from the Internet, it should be possibly software-wise without having to "pull the (networking) plug") or block any connection from the game with your trusted firewall. Or don't do anything about it and help the devs understand issues you might have with the game.

The game is great BTW. Play it and enjoy it.

There's no need to be afraid of unwanted logging or telemetry when the game is not running.

It was in my wishlist, but after reading this (keylogger, seriously?!?) I took it off the list. I have enough games to play.

Thank you all for this thread, thank god I found it first. If this were Steam, fine, DRM spyware shit is normal there, but not here.
I thought it was the game manufacturer or distributor that was trying to collect info not GOG?

I've never ticked the go for it box. Only ever the restricted.

Can anyone confirm my belief?
I checked the discussions to remind myself why I didn't buy this the last time it went on sale.

I've come to the opinion that any 'problematic' games are better run on GeForce Now, which means buying on Steam (or hopefully having it for free from the Epic Store (not gonna buy anything from them)). I'd rather buy from GOG, but AFAIK the only GOG thing supported on GFN is CP2077.
This is more intrusive than what comes with some free app games. I am dumbst4uck that this is being tolerated for games people have paid for! Worse still GOG is allowing it on their "drm free" platform.. And provide zero warning to buyers (not that it would excuse the existence)!

Crimson_T: If you go into the actual HZD folder and launch it from the shortcut or "HorizonZeroDawn.exe" it will start without galaxy as expected.
It's amazing to see just how many people don't know this...;) It really makes me scratch my head. Yes, running any GOG game from the game's exe will run that game without running the Galaxy GUI interface first.

I use Galaxy to download, install, and update my GoG games, but I run every one from its own exe direct from the game folder...bypassing Galaxy completely. Doing it this way is so much better than trying to wait on the manual installer to get updated--which takes a few days after the update has hit Galaxy. Using Galaxy to update your games means they will be updated much faster than they will be if you continuously use the manual installer files. (I create a desktop shortcut from the game's exe so that I can run the game from the desktop shortcut without having to open the game folder first.)

Running Galaxy is not required to run a GOG game. And, You do not have to use the manual installers in order to run the game from its own exe and bypass Galaxy.

Some people confuse it with Steam, but they apparently don't know that lots of Steam games do not require that Steamworks run when the game launches, and the Steam games that do not require Steam DRM can be run from the game's exe and bypass Steamworks, just as the galaxy GUI is bypassed when running GOG games.

The difference is that all GOG games can be run from their exe bypassing Galaxy, whereas Steam allows a wide variety of DRM and so some Steam games cannot be run without DRM, because Valve leaves it up to the game dev as to whether he wants DRM installed with his game. GOG's way is the better way, imo...;)

Yes, this sort of thing is definitely the game dev asking for info! It's perfectly harmless, and they don't know who you are, and they have no interest in looking at your Pizza orders from last week, or your chats with other people they don't know from Adam, either...;) People get so paranoid about this stuff and for no reason that I can see. Some people seem to think that riches equivalent to Fort Nox are on their computer and are so afraid someone might grab the non-existent valuables, etc.

I understand that you don't care. What I don't understand is, that you are claiming that this behavior is perfectly harmless. I suppose you are not developer of the game and you don't know what the game is doing. And you definitely don't know what their intentions are.

I understand that you simply want to play the game. And you want to believe, that it is ok. That is exactly why this practice is wrong, unethical and should be condemned by everyone. If so, developer would be pressured to remove this and everyone would be happy.

Collecting use data without any reason is simply wrong. Don't conform to it for any reason. Especially not on computer which you are using for other things than playing games.
