Homeworld: Cataclysm is not provided. The source code of the game is considered lost for eternity and cannot be re-released or remastered. Until someone provides GBX with the source code (and the code on the CD version is compiled and is not the source), there cannot be a re-release of Cataclysm.

Even if it was re-released, it would be under a different name because the word "Cataclysm" is trademarked to Blizzard.

- ish unhappeh..

So basically the only way to get it back is by buying original CD ?
I mean, can't they just use the old CD version to bring it back ?
(Doesn't have to be remastered..as long as is for sale no ?)

Correct.

If that were true, it would already have been provided in the original release last year. ;)

Given it's not been included, it's safe to assume that they need the original source code to do the classic releases, as the classic versions bundled with the Remastered Collection have a couple of tweaks (no multiplayer and some other patches) made to them to work on modern operating systems.

Same here. Cataclysm was my introduction to the Homeworld universe. And depite it's occasional narm it was a very effective horror story.
I must have been one of the few, who actually liked that every ship-type had it's own personality and reacted differently to the stresses of war with an eldritch abomination.

Can't GB just make more copies of Cataclysm and sell em retail?

The problem is they're not guaranteed to work on modern systems, and without the source code, GB can't really help with that.

they accomplished DOSBOX I imagine someone will do a linux virtual machine and shit
Homeworld: Cataclysm is not old enough where DOSBOX is needed. In fact, I have a CD copy of Cataclysm (from the Future War Collection) and when patched with the only patch that exists, it worked just fine in Windows 7 without problems.

Like I've already said: they need the source code to release any classic or remastered version. They can't just copy the contents of a CD and release that, since it's not going to work.

This means it could disappear and never be available again ? Oo

Unless the source code is found, then yes, that is quite likely. There are a number of copies available on places like eBay, but times are moving on and the older games are increasingly becoming incompatible with newer hardware. Even Cataclysm is pretty flaky with stability, sometimes events don't even fire the way they are supposed to.

I see, not nice to hear ! But well, maybe there'll be luck one day :S I heard only good things about the whole Homeworld serie, so I hope we'll see it released again !
Apparently, the source code for HW:C was last seen on servers of Rockstar Vancouver (former Barking Dog), which was shut down 4 years ago.

More information about this, and Barking Dog, can be heard in this (video) podcast by Space Game Junkie :
https://www.spacegamejunkie.com/featured/sjg-podcast-95-cataclysmic-homeworld-coming/
and this article :
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139695-Gearbox-Homeworld-Cataclysm-Re-Release-Comes-Down-to-Finding-the-Source-Code

Since then (shortly after the studio was bought and renamed), most (?) of the Barking Dog employees (and in particular those who wrote the script of Homeworld 1) went on to create Kerberos Productions, of Sword of the Stars fame :
http://wiki.swordofthestars.com/sots1/About_Kerberos_Productions

This thread on the Kerberos Productions forums about Homeworld Remastered (with input from some of the former HW:C devs) might also be interesting :
http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=50010&hilit=cataclysm

(Some of the other Barking Dog employees apparently went on to Ironclad of Sins of a Solar Empire fame.)

You can get some of Kerberos Production games here on GoG, BTW :
https://www.gog.com/games?devpub=kerberos_productions&sort=bestselling&page=1
(Though you might want to wait until the issues with DLC/Updates/Galaxy have been sorted out for SotS : The Pit;
and as for SotS1, it would seem that the new publisher, Paradox Interactive, is still getting all the money from the sales of the game.)

Well I wouldn't say never. You would be amazed what a person can do with assembly on even a compiled binnary given enough time. Anything is possible :)

(Case and point take a look at what this guy did to Need for Speed III, and he sure as heck didn't have source code http://veg.by/en/projects/nfs3/)

But if they were to do the remastered treatment, it would be from scratch. (also not utterly impossible but improbable)

oh plz..I haven't seen a game I couldn't run on my system as of yet, except for the ones with newer OS req's..
So..if they'd be nice ppl at ABS..CBS..PMS..whatever PBS..they'd offer the old version of Cataclysm (compiled as-is)
(without support) and let the gamer community stab at it when it comes to getting it to work..
I think I'll need about 5 minutes TOPS..

But hey..that's me wishing were bunnyhorses...(fyi..horses=bunnies..albeit big ones..)
