Old fan of Homeworld here. I bought the remastered release just so I could play the classics.

Unfortunately, Homeworld 1 Classic crashes any time an explosion occurs. Therefore, I'm unable to make it past the very first mission. I'm running Windows 10, I've tried compatibility modes and running as administrator to no avail. This is huge bummer, does anyone else have this issue?

I do, man. Turned resolution down, 16-bit, admin, windows 10 and seven, to no avail!!
Should we send a support ticket, then?
Probably better to try and find a CD copy of the game, which is more likely to work than the bundled classic version.

But... digital distribution, drm-free and all...? Nah?! :P

So is it buggy as heck, eh? I played Emergence on a ~10yr old pc with zero issues, 18h of pure and simple fun. Even managed to run on Intel Hd cards/got it running on my crappy desktop and so on.
Been lately diggin' the insides of this amazing, I should say, Homeworld Remastered and all -mostly playing the 2nd one, classic edition since my lappy can't handle the remastered one- and now I came across this. Kinda disappointing but I'm trying everything I can ;P

btw steam forums won't help much, either ;(

edit: currently installing it @ work / the most crappy lappy you've ever seen. Will post results asap!
edit2: it works and doesn't crash. Weirdly enough on this Intel hd card (3000) everytime there's an explosion some weird white boxes appear but nonetheless it runs ok on this W10 machine. Hummm..

Same problem here, it crashes in the first mission whenever I destroy a ship. Strangely it didn't crash in the training tutorial mission at all before, but now it's even crashing there. Not sure what's changed to make it do that.

My best guess is that the game's crashing because it's hitting an exception in the code. There's no real way to fix that, other than reporting it to GOG/Gearbox Support teams and hope they'll care enough to fix it.

My recommendation is to find a CD copy of the game (there are plenty out there and they still work on Windows 10 without issues) and play with that, as it will not have been "edited" by GBX/GOG, which may have introduced bugs to the code.

I did use the registry edit trick on the exe to enable widescreen as described on the PC Gaming Wiki page for the game, but it was working fine even after that and running great. Could that have messed it up?

Edit: Seems using Galaxy's Verify/Repair option fixes the issue. I'm guessing there was something that got screwed up after awhile somehow. Remains to be seen if this fix will stick.

What worked for me is the Homeworld hardware acceleration fix. It's linked from the pcgamingwiki page: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Homeworld

You simply unzip it to and run the install.bat.

*EDIT* wait that didn't work for non-default resolutions. See my next post.

That worked to start with but it still crashed if I changed the resolution. So forget my last post.

What really works for me is to run homeworld.exe with the command line parameter /device d3d. If you don't know how to do that then here's how:

1. Find the folder "Homeworld Remastered\Homeworld1Classic\exe" (if you use Galaxy there's a Show Folder button under Manage installation that'll help you find it, otherwise try looking in your gog folder).

2, Right click on Homeworld.exe and select "Create shortcut".

3. A new shortcut should appear. Right click it and select "Properties".

4. In the text box labelled "Target" add a space at the end and then put /device d3d. It should look something like "C:\GOG Galaxy\Homeworld Remastered\Homeworld1Classic\exe\Homeworld.exe" /device d3d but the actual path will depend on where Homeworld is installed for you.

5. [optional] Rename the shortcut by clicking the "General" tab and typing a better name into the text box next to the icon. E.g. "Homeworld Classic".

6. Click the "Ok" button to apply the changes.

Now you should run the game from this shortcut and it shouldn't crash (if your problem is the same as mine).

Hi,

I've installed Homeworld Remastered Collection few days ago, and what? Homeworld 1 Classic crashed on training mission with drones, same in the first mission of campaign, when drone explodes then the game is crashing to the desktop ;/ (Homeworld 2 Classic did not even start, remastered versions are working well).

I've done everything but nothing worked for me and then I've realized that it might be a graphics problem. I have a Gigabyte Radeon HD7770 1GB OC with Radeon software version 17.7.

The fix for me in Homeworld 1 Classic was:

Go to the settings of your radeon graphics card -> then in the main window click on GAMING -> GLOBAL SETTINGS -> and in the GLOBAL SETTING chart turn everything to off or select "Use application settings", like in the image: imgur.com/a/MDwAg and then the game should work well. I played to the second mission and destroy many of drones and turanic raiders ships and nothing happened, no crash or something. I think this solution should work for the amd/radeon cards, maybe for nvidia too in the same settings.

The original Homeworld from 1999 (got a cd from some games magazine) work well and everything but one issue occurs, the build menu and research menu are so laggy that it can't be played... someone have a fix for that?
Nothing worked for me but this:

- Compatibility mode for Windows XP (SP3)
- Editing Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sierra On-Line\Homeworld

#1 CmdLine REG_SZ /triple /enableSSE /disableAVI /pilotview
#2 deviceToSelect REG_SZ d3d
#3 glToSelect REG_SZ rgl.dll

Any of supported default resoulutions

IMPORTANT: Game will override these registry settings on launch so AFTER editing this 3 lines make sure you right click on "Homeword" folder in registry and edit premissions for admin/system/user so there is only "READ" checked. Uncheck any FULL CONTROL or If you can't uncheck it, block/deny it with checkbox on the right column.

It's been a while, but you might try this trick from pcgamingwiki. It helped with my CD copy of Homeworld and allowed me to play it in widescreen.
Well, Same issue here and none of the fixes have worked - either for the gog or steam versions. :(
I had this same problem, but none of the fixes in the thread worked for me. The option that seemed to fix it was using the command line option:
/heap 1073741824
Which sets the amount of RAM the game can use to 1GB (instead of a smaller amount which is default). It seems that explosions cause a problem with RAM allocation or something like that. To anyone having this issue, try the option above!
