Pinky69: I must be one of the lucky ones. Am on Win7 64 and no problems here as of yet.
Good to hear another second opinion. Somebody else mentioned they were doing okay. After DK2 (yeah, sorry to keep bringing that up), It's just painful for me to see too many people have big problems. I like this site a LOT, but as it gets bigger I worry the focus on quality may be lost.
Just reporting in so it wouldn't seem like absolutely everyone except Pinky69 is having the problem. So anyway, the game runs fine on my computer. Win7 64bit, 4 core processor. Didn't do any tricks after installing (didn't even run as admin), installed to E:\Games\Hitman Codename 47.
To those of you that have this game working out of the gate, lucky you.

Though one question... Is that because you're running this on a desktop? Because I'm trying to run this game from a laptop, and it's been such a chore to try to get this bloody game working right. I'm still trying to get the game to slow down.

I just tried it with a Win XP 32bit, dual core processor, integrated graphics card -laptop, and it was speedy. Oh so speedy. Perhaps it is as you say. The working one was indeed a desktop.
Just posted something up in the other thread that is worth giving a shot :

I played the steam version on my laptop and it was speed, thats why I made the thread.

iainmet: There isnt a patch or alternative type fix for this from what I am aware of that sets affinity on the games exe permanently. So unfortunately you will have to do this everytime you start the game up.
Erm, yes there is. Create your own batch file to launch the game and specify the core affinity within the batch file. For example:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C START "Tomb Raider" /high /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tomb Raider - Legend\trl.exe"

This command in a batch file would launch trl.exe using only the primary core.

And explain to me why I should need to know all this technical jargon just to play a game? I thought the whole point in GOG was that they took care of this stuff for us i.e. integrating DosBox into the games to save people like me from pulling my hair out trying to make it work!

If I wanted to buy a game I couldnt run I would buy it off steam!

Calm down man, my reply was to iainmet as a way of letting him (and any other interested parties looking at using core affinity) know how to launch apps with one core. The community here on GOG is really quite a helpful one but if you have a look around you'll find a lot of technical fixes discussed and core affinity is a common one.

Thanks for that, last time I created batch files was back in the day setting up DOS boot discs with CD support through mscdex for old games when Windows 95 launched. Now I just look about the net and find what I need. You are right in what you say about having to set affinity on some of the older games. Its a must with the Dark Engine games, if you dont do it the game locks up. I have my task manager locked to my start bar so I just alt tab out if there isnt a pre made fix and do it via the processes and the games exe.

Going to create a text file with the info you have put there. It will definately come in handy :)

As a PC gamer it is always handy to know things like this. I do like to tinker and try ang get stuff working. Its always good dropping in with experiences and suggestions for users new to retro gaming. Another thing that you have to bear in mind is that no pc's are the same unless you have bought one off the shelf (shudder!!) What works perfect on one system could be complete trouble on another

No worries. Just bear in mind that the batch file calls the command prompt and uses a START command to launch your chosen executable (in my example this being trl.exe). The affinity value is a coded hexadecimal value that tells it which cores to use.

1st core = 1
2nd core = 2
3rd core = 4
4th core = 8
5th core = 10 ( hexadecimal 16 )
6th core = 20 ( hexadecimal 32 )

So if you want to use the first and second cores of a quad core system you would use the value 3 (1+2).

The /high part of it just tells it to run the executable as high priority. You can omit this if you want.

Oh, and last of all, if it is a really complaining game that needs to run as administrator then you may need to specify the working directory in the batch command using the /d flag. My example would then look like this:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C START "Tomb Raider" /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tomb Raider - Legend" /high /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tomb Raider - Legend\trl.exe"

Hope this makes sense. I did a lot of research before I moved on to Vista a few years ago as I was aware of potential compatibility issues.

JMMREVIEW, some other useful tips are running as administor, running in different compatibility modes, disabling visual themes (all in the shortcut properties). Also, installing outside of Program Files or Program Files (x86) if using Vista or Win7 (I use C:\Games) as Program Files is a protected folder and can cause issues with settings and save files and such.

ImageCFG can be used to patch the .exe itself to only use a certain core / only run in single CPU mode etc.

People have so many different hardware configurations and the games are so dated, many before backwards compatibility was thought of, that issues for some people are bound to come up. (And that's why the game forums are so handy.)

I'd like to think, though, that most of the gogs here work for the majority of people. But it does pay to do your research, and not go crazy buying games anywhere.
I'm trying to play it on a desktop with Windows 7, but it just crashes every time I try to start a new game. I'm able to make a new profile in it, but as soon as I click "OK", it instantly crashes back to the desktop, 3 times in a row now. Any tips to solve this?
