I am trying to use Fraps with said game. I set the graphics option to OpenGL and fixed the CPU option to dynamic. A few seconds into recording, the game crashes or otherwise stutters and makes me close the game myself.

I'm not sure whether it's a problem with DOSBox or the game itself. I sorta tried switching graphic options to the others, but either it won't let me record or the graphics are terrible and still crashes. I have already recorded gameplay of HoMM II so I know it's not a problem with my computer. Any other ideas?

Hi, I know this is an old topic, but this is one of the issues that just pops up every once in a while.

To capture video in DOSBox, use the built in video recording function instead.

Fraps, in most cases, will not be able to record a DOS game for you.
Wow, I totally forgotten I posted this.

Since then, I reconfigured the DOSBox settings and was able to record at 60 FPS, something to do with the CPU setting and etc. I didn't know DOSBox had a built-in video feature; turns out I don't really have to use it. Thanks for the info.

But while I'm posting here, I can't figure out the problem with Fraps and Homm III and IV.

For III, it's like it takes screenshots every so often but records the audio as it would normally. I think there's some mod that enlargens the screen size, but it's been a while since I last checked.
For IV, I can only record it when I have it windowed, no full-screen, recording the desktop. That method would really take up too much hard-drive space, so I'm stuck there.

you mean the HD mod? I don't know how it can fix your problem but I can at least suggest you to try some of the different color modes to see if that is a game changer.

That's the one! I've used it before, but then had to move some files around and etc., forgot all about it. Installed it again, works with Fraps like a charm! Thanks.

Now if I can figure out how to record IV in an easier way, I'll be set.
I'm having issues myself recording Heroes Chronicles (same engine as HOMM III, so any answers should work for both). I followed the instructions elsewhere in this forum to run HC in a window (set display to 16-bit graphics, then hit F4 while the game's loaded). I tried CamStudio 2.0 first (with a fixed region set to 800x600), but ran into the 2GB limit if I tried recording my usual 25 min. episodes (so I cut back to 20 min. episodes). I then tried Bandicam, and liked it so much I've basically switched to it.
However, after 2 months, I'm coming back to Heroes Chronicles to record another campaign, and am running into a problem with cursor movements appearing to "erase" the screen within the recording window created by Bandicam. I don't remember having this problem while recording the previous Heroes Chronicles campaign, but I've forgotten what settings I was using then or what I may have been doing which prevented the "erasing cursor" issue from being a problem. Any suggestions?
