Wait which game? You have to hit space or something in HOMM2 to split them

Shift+click on the town/hero screen. Not sure if it works in HoMM1, though.

Yea, I'd only ever played HOMM2 and 3 before, so when I tried to split units and couldn't I was confused for a second until I realized that they must've added that feature in HOMM2. Still, the original is a great game.
