Sound is skipping in this for me about every 20-30 seconds. Only lasts for about a second but it's enough to drive me crazy. Running the latest Realtek Vista drivers under Windows 7 RC.
Help? :)

Have you tried under Vista or XP?
I know it's not a good answer but it could help to know whether it's 7 specific...

I have the game running fine under Vista. One thing to try though is to change the sound card type the game uses.
Guide:
1. Open up the start menu and search for Notepad
2. Right click on notepad and open it as administrator
3. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Heroes Of Might And Magic
4. Open the file dosboxHOMM1.conf
5. Scroll down to the bottom and put a # in front of the line "loadfix -4 heroes.exe"
6. Write "Setup" on its own line bellow loadfix
7. Save the config file but do not close notepad yet
8. Start the game using the normal short cut.
9. Press 1 - 8 - 3 - 4
10. Remove the "Setup" and # from notepad and save and close
11. Try the game
If it does not work you can always experiment. Try using GUS for instance.

That appears to have done the trick. Thank you very much kind sir!
Again, this place is fabulous.
EDIT: PROBLEM FIXED! I have found the solution to sound skipping problems in a HOMM2 thread. I just had to bump the prebuffer value from 10ms to 100 in the .conf file.
Hello,
I know this is an old thread but I am having sound skipping troubles too and I've tried anss123's tips but to no avail.
I can't even run the music in the highest quality and with Sound Blaster/Compatible I get lower quality sound but with skipping. I am using 32-bit Vista and do not run any cpu intensive programs at the same time as the game.
Does anyone have a clue about what might be wrong in my case?

Just bumping up this thread for those who recently purchased the game during the sale. Changing the prebuffer valdue from 10ms to 100ms as 696 states above, fixed the stuttering/skipping that I was getting with the Opera sound mode. Thanks 696!
Thank you so much 696 - this fix worked like a charm :))!
Could someone please put all this info onto http://pcgamingwiki.com? I'm not good at updating that sort of stuff.
