Like everyone else I play the Ms-Dos version of the game and I remember perfectly that in the game there is a little music/sound of a few seconds during the following events:

- When a hero gets an extra level
- At the beginning of the week, on day 1.

But strangely in the game, these music/sounds are never played I feel like they are buggy.

Would there be a problem with the Dos/GOG version ? I don't think that these sounds/music exist only in the Windows version of the game.

Here's a video that will clearly explain the sounds that are missing.

And for information the video comes from a French version under Dos, whereas that of GoG (with always the French Version) is apparently bugged, or DosBox is faulty, go figure.

Funny, I completely forgot about these.

Yes, they are indeed missing. A few years ago I played Heroes 1 with a physical copy on a Windows 95 machine and it had these sounds. It's possible they were unintentionally killed in a patch but I wouldn't know for sure.

I recommend you contact support and maybe send them the video aswell for verification. Maybe if enough of us complain about the poor state of these games they will finally do something.

I've already contacted support and they don't know what the problem is.

open dosboxHOMM1.conf
search for the line cycles=max
change that
cycles=max limit 10000

save and try again.
It gave me the level up sound effect. Maybe it works for you as well.

Please let me know if it worked for you as well.

edit! changed it to 10000

Oh nice :o

Would it be possible for you to also look into the stuttering that occurs in Heroes 2 when you move your heroes across the map? It is very noticable when playing with gallop movement speed and I've been looking for a fix for months now. It doesn't happen with older versions of the game.

There is also a weird delay with resource pickups where it seems to pause for a second before they disappear. This issue only seems to happen with the dos version however.

In fact, the trick doesn't really work: with 10,000 cycles I get the sounds, but in the end the game runs too slowly, whereas on the contrary, if I increase the cycles the sounds are no longer played...
This one is what wrong in original default DosBox fonf and in all GOG's. Not sure which should be there on cycles, but go to near gradation options and change them to lower. Then during game use thekr hotkeys to increase/decrease cycles during gameplay and look if it makenit better (or worse).
Default for DosBox is cycles=auto. And for many(most/all?) GOG. This one is probably forrect. Only shifts to edit. Idk. Maybe limit is better but which numbers? For sure is absolutely no for max unlimited.

Windows version is much better. But GOG do not provide it. As i remember there is disc image in GOGs build. Maybe it have Win version. Try to install it above GOGs build. Windows version patch required.
Also try more uptodate standard DosBox.

Windows versions of combined Dos+Win are generally always better. Get ultimate patches. Improvements. And even aside of that, assume H1 are fully identical in Dos and Win - both DOS-mode of Win98/Me and so DosBox (work identical) indeed relied on hardware and hardware settings. Windows DirectX provide better sound and music quality (someone want to say opposite?).
And yes. H1 and H2 are not exceptions. Their Windows builds got more patches, more improvements. Including Scen Editor's. GOG default setup is their usual case - non uptodate Dos-rip-only game version.
(Gog also screw DOS-only games never got patches like Toonstruck with making custom ScummVM build and custom exe incompatible with DosBox)

(SfummVM is 3rd party engine. DosBox are better in theory and on practice providing original experience, with better aspect correction and screen quality, original features and controls)
