NovHak: I suppose you didn't try to create a directory junction
Yes, as I explained above, essentially I don't need a temporary solution for this problem anyhow. I just want to know if something's wrong on my side (i.e., SD card or tablet), or that is a game's compatibility issue with Windows 10. Maybe Bootler will try it and tell us if it works?

NovHak: You may want to check here in particular :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic® III\1.0

Or here if you own a 32 bit edition of Windows 10 (hence without the Windows-on-Windows subkey) :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic® III\1.0

Most notably, there's an AppPath value, mine is set to :
D:\Program Files (x86)\Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete\

since I have it on D: too. But maybe yours is set to another value for some reason.
Did it, path in registry is correct. Kind of :D. Currently I have game installed on C:. but path in registry starts with D:. Game runs nevertheless.

Ok, I remembered that I have few official Russian anthologies of Heroes (from Buka and 1C) on my shelves. After all, I'm fan of series with almost 20 years experience :D. Somewhere among these discs there should be another CD-less version of Heroes 3 Complete. I'll try to connect my portable DVD-RW to the tablet and install it.

Best of luck then !

In case it works, maybe it's because of GOG's universal patch which I think is very GOG-specific, hence installing GOG's version without the universal patch may work as well...

EDIT : Maybe I nailed it ! Check this thread. Strangely there are people here having a very similar problem, I noticed someone installing on an SD card from a netbook. You may want to install your game back on D:, then check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic® III\1.0 and set the CDDrive value to C:

Mine is set to D: and it still works, but maybe the problem only affects some systems without a CD drive (mine has one). Netbooks and tablets don't have one.

Oh and to ensure better consistency, it's better to delete the virtualised registry key of HOMM3 once you have removed the game from C:. The game uninstallation process won't do it. I mean this one :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\New World Computing

Well, It seems that my trouble was resolved few minutes ago. I was too busy for last few days and meanwhile my Galaxy client was updated to the latest version. I was pleased with improvements and decided to try to install Heroes 3 right from the client (previous version of Galaxy client behaved incorrectly on my tablet, despite my settings trying to install everything right on C:). And guess what? Heroes 3 (v.2.1.0.021) was installed on SD and now running great. Thanks, GOG guys! I'm sure the downloadable installer will be updated within the next few days.

Karacho !

Could you tell me what the CDDrive value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic® III\1.0 is ? Isn't it C: by any chance ?

It is. I guess this entry was created with my previous installation of Heroes 3, because AppPath here says "C:\GOG Games\Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Complete", whereas Galaxy client installed the game yesterday in D:\GOG Games\HoMM 3 Complete (note the terminal directory's name - it's by default and I think it was changed in v.2.1.0.021).

The CDDrive value was probably removed when you uninstalled the game from C:, and that was likely the problem. Installations used to set the CDDrive value to the drive letter where the game is installed, and it seems to cause problems on some systems with no CD drive, where it should be set to C: instead. That's probably what they changed on the installation package you just used. Strange coincidence by the way... or maybe someone at GOG read this thread :D
