atkes: After I've done all that, game runs OK but the pre-battle music that plays just before combat begins is gone ?
Yep, it's gone by default. Which I actually like because it only slowed down the gameplay - you cannot do anything during the music.

If you love it, though, you can turn it back on (you can actually do that with everything changed by Heroes3HD). Just open setup and click to edit ini configuration file. Everything is documented there.
I got the patch and it seems to be working. But even on the gameplay screen I have large amounts of empty space around a small main window containing the actual game (at 1366X768). A dumb question, perhaps, but what is the best resolution for a widescreen monitor that minimizes the "dead space"?

Thanks!
1366 x768 is ok for an 22 inch screen or larger,-windows in battles town etc still exist
but the windows are big enough
.in case of smaller monitor try the lowest resolution

my personal preference
iis the lowest default 1180x664 @ 23inch 16x9
if i had a 16x10 I would play @1062x664
you shouldnt have a blank rectangle in the lower right side of the screen
and still you can see all extra buttons and all eight heroes

you can also input a custom resolution of choice but you should respect aspect ratio
open Heroes3HDSetup.exe
delete old resolution in first field ( yes you can write in there)
write a new one eg 1280x720
apply and launch

I wouldnt go below 664as it loses the new layout
and i admit that I prefer that to the original
on map you are going to see only first 5 of your heroes and cities instead of 8
and the dimensional door radius wont be highlighted
(but still will cover only 800x600)

but everybody should keep in mind : the higher the resolution the easier the game
as you can see more map reducing element of AI surprise and making planing ahead easier
(i dislike that)

I think if you entered screen resolution not supported by your graphics card in HoMM3HD the game chooses the smallest resolution containing the chosen one instead. Check if your screen really supports 1366x768 (if you can set a desktop resolution to a particular one that means it's supported) and, if not, change it to sth supported.

ahh, thank you ..
it was this option below in hirez.ini
No wait playing sounds = 0

EDIT:
Heroes3HD appears to add the option to 'invite' heroes at the tavern too, thus you can assemble the team you want, anytime! excellent.

Today when I tried to start Heroes3HD.exe (version 2.96f) Avast Antivirus said it contains a virus (WIN32:IIIRT [Susp]). Could it be a false alert? Yesterday it was fine but since then Avast has updated virus definitions. Is it a false alert or is Avast just getting better at noticing viruses?

If someone else is also using Avast Antivirus 6, could you please check if it gives a warning message to you when you try to start the game from that file?
Avast doesn't flag it for me.

I'm using 1280x1024 fine (in WinXP though). It does crash very occasionally but I think Win98 compatibility mode fixes that.

Thanks. I just noticed that there were a second virus definitions update for today and after that update I restored the file from the virus chest and scanned the game folder and then tried to start the game again and this time got no warning. So I guess this implies it was indeed a false positive. Damn, I hate this stuff. It's the uncertainty that gets you.
sorry to resurrect an old post - I realize that higher resolutions enable more of the map to view and is kind of like cheating. What is the highest resolution I can achieve before I see more than the 800x600 stock resolution? or is there any other way to reduce this effect besides going with 800x600? I have a 16:9 monitor and 1600x900 was too small, so I tried 1280x720. It looks so nice, I hate to go back! any advice?

or does it not really make alot of difference because you can scroll around the screen anyway? Thanks

There is still "fog of war" for unexplored land and, yes, you can freely scroll the minimap anyway
I don't see this as a real cheat, just a handy improvement.
The link to the imagecfg thing is dead, is that still an issue? If so, where/how do I get it?

Nevermind, found it:

http://www.robpol86.com/index.php/ImageCFG

So, that leaves me with: Heroes3HD always prompts for a CD. Runs fine anyway, but it's annoying. Waaah.

Newest version is out, and I'm glad to find that it now works with UndeadHalfOrc's balance patch. The balance patch has it's own exe file to run the game with, and previous versions of Heroes3HD weren't compatible with it.

That's neat.

Have you seen an english change log for the HD patch? (I think the one that comes with it is in Russian)

Is the balance patch well regarded?
It's not without bugs. The auto-save between the campaign scenarios doesn't work with it, at least in my version.

The improvements to the user-interface are really good.

But GOG's version is 4.0, really? Ubisoft supplies 3.1 and some shady 3DO look-alike site 3.2. What's the difference?

There's no english changelog as far as I know, but if you use google translate on this page, it lists all of the features and gives an explanation of what each does. I don't think anything major was added in this release, it seems to only be compatibility stuff. But it's still worth checking out that page so that you know which things to turn on/off to suit your needs.

As for the balance patch, I think it's well regarded. The maker knows what he's doing and took community feedback into account as well. And I'm no expert on balance or anything, but reading through the list of changes a lot of them make sense to me, especially the changes to secondary skills, spells and Conflux in general.

Haven't noticed any bugs myself yet, but you might be right about the autosaves. I normally just turn them off anyway. I'm not sure about the version numbers, but I don't think there should be any differences other than the version number itself.
