Ok, I'm not even talking about the expansion map editor, I'm talking about any map editor, I got HOMM2 Gold Edition and finally got round to playing it but I have no map editor.
In my HOMM2 Gold files I have "EDITOR2" file which is 823KB, I open it, it requests permission to open, I give that and then it says that fullscreen mode is not supported (it is not set to open fullscreen). There is another file in this folder called "dosboxhomm2_editor.conf" (7.17KB) which when clicked on says "Windows wants to know what you want to open this program with it can either search online or you select from a list" but basically that won't open either.
Do I even have a map editor? Any clue at all? I'll put a bet on it being something really dumb and simple like last time.

Low0xygen: Did all that but I've still got no map editor, it didn't put any shortcut other than the main game one on my desktop, the files are all the same.
:(

Editor shortcut isn't placed on desktop, but in GOG\Homm2 folder in Start Menu;

Just a side question, as I don't use Vista: is it possible that OS somehow protects Program Files and its subsequent folders from altering? Just curious ;)

Namur, I can save the file, but it doesn't change anything.
Theiv, the editor just isn't anywhere, not on my desktop, not on my start menu, not in the "File Location"... there's a file named "EDITOR2" (824KB File Type: Application) but if I click on that it brings up a black box and tells me it can't run in fullscreen mode despite the fact it's not set in bloody fullscreen mode.
This whole thing is just too much, where should the editor be and why isn't it there? It seems everyone else has at least got the "non-expansion" version.

I don't use Vista, i jumped from XP to 7 ;)
But yeah, basically Vista and 7 are extremely touchy about changing anything within the C:\Program Files even with an Admin account.
Changing config settings from within the game or with a config tool can crash a game or sometimes it can just disregard whatever changes you made, sometimes there are issues with saving games when they are stored in the game folder, issues with editing files can pop up, etc.

Is it possible that you have to tick some checkbox on the installer to get the editor ?
I don't have the game myself, so i can't check this...
EDIT: nvm, you have the files so apparently it's installed.

In advance, sorry for double post but I don't know if it's been eaten or is it just lag ;)
You can also try adding editor shortcut manually: duplicate main game shortcut and change target path to:
[your homm2 path]\DOSBOX\dosbox.exe -conf dosboxhomm2_editor.conf -noconsole
(I assume that you've installed dosbox together with H2)
Another desperate solution - install game to another drive than C:

Erm... what do I type in the Target box? Apologies for my incompatibility with all this overcomplicated s**t.
Oh and your post got eaten, I've had that happen to.

Low0xygen: <snip>

in target box replace that part: gogwrap.exe GOGHOMM2GOLD
with
DOSBOX\dosbox.exe -conf dosboxhomm2_editor.conf -noconsole
Stupid question probably... is it possible to download the Map Editor seperately?

Tried... it just brings up a "Problems with shortcut" box saying:
"The name '"C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Heroes of Might and Magic 2 GOLD\DOSBOX\dosbox.exe -conf dosboxhomm2_editor.conf -noconsole' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path name and file name are correct.

Delete quotation marks from path... and you do have dosbox in your homm2 folder, right?

There are no quotation marks. I have dosbox in the HOMM2 folder yes.

Then err... add them? ^_^` sorry, I don't have them on XP, but I just installed h2 on Vista laptop and shortcut looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Heroes of Might and Magic 2 GOLD\DOSBOX\dosbox.exe" -conf dosboxhomm2_editor.conf -noconsole
and to answer your question: my guess that it would still need Dosbox to run on newer system.

OH JEEZ!
It worked, I put in the target you told me to, this time adding quotation marks... now I feel like a complete idiot... but it's worked... Thanks for wasting away time on that.

Glad it worked for you :)
Nevertheless, at one point you may want to notify support with this problem, especially that reinstall didn't help. They may find the cause.
Happy map-making :P
I've done this and it works. But, my question is this. I've made a few maps but I can't play them or find them anywhere in the folder. When I open Map Maker again however the maps I saved are there and I can load and work on them. Why can't I play them in the game and where can I find them in the folder? If there is a default save location for maps what is it? Like I said map maker works and I can save my maps but i can't play them and i can't find them. I'm not sure what is wrong. Everything seems to work fine I just can't play my maps i made.

You need to put them in the appropriate game folder for scenario maps.
I just downloaded this game today, and I tried setting up the target exactly as displayed here, but DOSbox just opens and runs idle. Is there a fix for this?
