How do i get DOSBOX to run the Heroes2.exe file?
No posts in this topic were marked as the solution yet. If you can help, add your reply
Using GOG links. Or use own pre-installed\configure DosBox in separate folder - just drug and drop heroes2.exe DOS executable.

Why not use Windows version?

It's easier to get correct aspect ratio with DOSBox.
With the Windows version you'll need DgVoodoo or something to avoid an ugly, stretched image.

Depending on the video card you have, you could also use your GPU's control panel to do this. Also some monitors have the setting to do it on monitor level.

But yes, in general playing around with graphics settings is easier on DOSBox. Also, it can run on other OSes, like Linux.

If you have the GOG version, you don't need to worry about it. Just use the links as QWEEDDYZ suggested. If you have your own version (off a CD for example), then just run it like you'd run any other file on DOSBox. Copy to a folder, mount it and run it. Or use a DOSBox GUI front end. What exact problems are you having?

The GL wrapper in the sticky post is way more straighforward to setup than dgVoodoo (just copy a couple of files into the main dir, then do everything from the game menu) and works really nicely
For non-Windows users, running the Windows version under Wine with the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option in winecfg enabled causes the game to run in an aspect-correct window, rather than going to fullscreen mode and being stretched. I don't think OP is a Wine user, but since we are veering off into the ways to handle aspect ratio, I wanted to point out that Wine has a straightforward solution to this, although perhaps not one that everyone would discover quickly.

What's the deal with aspect ratio. I kinda like playing homm2 in 16:9 (with the wrapper). I dislike black edges on screen
It just looks bloody awful, stretched and blurry.

Your both wrong. Your both use ugly blured wrong proportions aspect ratio that not fullscreen but widescreen. You should set in video driver (and on monitor if it have taht option) "Keep Aspect ratio". Image will be correctly and less blured stretch to 16:9 as much possible to make it still be 4:3 - with black bars.
THAT how you should play 4:3 games.

For real widescreen use mod-wrapper (Windows version only). It mod nd so not stretch image like video card do, but increase (or zoom out) image.

Can't say that I see anything blurry...
Playing in wrong proportions spoils your eyesight

Use https://github.com/ihhub/fheroes2
and fordet about DosBox etc...
Indeed forget about DOS version.

Just install and play GOG Win version. It perfect. With black bars. Or install GL wrapper HeroesGL. Widescreen almost perfectly working (still native widescreen game is native, out-\in- zoomed screen is not true proper widescreen as well, but there is optimal solution - resolution when you still be OK with zoom level).

GL wrapper mod always set borderless fullscreen windowed - all resolution-etc\video card settings are taken from Desktop settings. There is not need to set display native for in-wrapper resolution.

First is perfect way to play for Win or Mac+MacWine users. Second one is second perfect way to play.
Any remakes always stay as remakes - not original. not upgraded - but differ. Still can be very good way to play, still been second(third for sunj) way to play.
Or maybe first way to play Win version on Linux\any else platforms. But that only for very few linux-gamers and a little bit more console-players.
Again, if you on Win - GOG Win installator - not standard one or GOG Galaxy! - and optionally GL-wrapper-mod from Verok for zoomed-out widescreen support.

Check remake anyway. Official ones or fan-made, remakes are completely new experience - and this is always good reason to try it.

fheroes2 is not a remake. This is a free implementation of the engine. She is no longer inferior to anything. But much more convenient. AI no longer makes such stupid mistakes as in the original. And constantly improving. The convenience of the game is already on top. I tried recently to return to wine + original - a lot of inconvenience and AI stupidity in combat. When there is a release (1.0), then the free implementation can be considered really better than the original, but even now I don’t want to go back. Only the resolution needs to be selected not very high. To your taste. But not fillHD/2K/4K
