Hi everybody, I'm here to take a little of your precious time (playing games).
I know that Heroes I run in DOSBox and that DOSBox is available on Mac OS X.
Since the version available here at GOG is an installer with the game already embedded with DOSBox for Windows, Boxer (DOSBox front-end) tell me that the application is a Microsoft Windows Program and not a DOS one.
So is there someone who knows what file(s) to extract from the exe (if possible) to give to Boxer/DOSBox?
Or should I just run the installer on Windows and take interesting resulting directory(ies)/file(s)?
This question / problem has been solved by Horusimage
HoMM can be started manually from DOSBox, so I presume from Boxer as well.
You would just need to enter commands simliar to those in dosboxHOMM1.conf file.
I run the installer through wine in order to get files on Linux.
Perharps you can use darwine ?

I'm currently at work but I'll test when I'm back home...

In fact I've just run the installer at work and will bring back files at home. Boxer is said to be able to run old games without any config but I don't know how well it'll interact with GOG DOSBox conf... If this feature block me, I'll trap Boxer and just use DOSBox for OS X with a little bit of conf tuning.
Just a matter of time now... I'll let you know if it works... and what solution works.

So OK I've managed to run Heroes I and Heroes II on Mac OS X with full screen and sound... Let's recap how to make them run.
Heroes I
1 - Unpack/install GOG's setup executable and copy resulting directories on Mac OS X. For me in /Users/<user>/Documents .
2 - Install DOSBox on Mac OS X. No need for a front-end, just copy DOSBox.dmg content on Mac OS X. For me in /Applications/DOSBox .
3 - Open Terminal and go in Heroes I root directory:
cd /Users/<user>/Documents/GOG.com/Heroes\ Of\ Might\ And\ Magic/
4 - Run DOSBox with GOG conf in parameter:
/Applications/DOSBox/DOSBox.app/Contents/MacOS/DOSBox -conf dosboxHOMM1.conf
5 - That's it!
Heroes II
1 - Unpack/install GOG's setup executable and copy resulting directories on Mac OS X. For me in /Users/<user>/Documents .
2 - Install DOSBox on Mac OS X. No need for a front-end, just copy DOSBox.dmg content on Mac OS X. For me in /Applications/DOSBox .
3 - Open Terminal and go in Heroes II root directory:
cd /Users/<user>/Documents/GOG.com/Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 2\ GOLD/
4 - Edit DOSBox GOG conf files with some Unix magic ^^:
sed 's:.\\:./:g' dosboxhomm2.conf > dosboxhomm2_macosx.conf
sed 's:.\\:./:g' dosboxhomm2_client.conf > dosboxhomm2_client_macosx.conf
sed 's:.\\:./:g' dosboxhomm2_editor.conf > dosboxhomm2_editor_macosx.conf
sed 's:.\\:./:g' dosboxhomm2_server.conf > dosboxhomm2_server_macosx.conf
5 - Run DOSBox with GOG conf in parameter:
/Applications/DOSBox/DOSBox.app/Contents/MacOS/DOSBox -conf dosboxhomm2_macosx.conf
6 - That's it!
Thanks DOSBox, thanks GOG.com, you're my Heroes (pun intended)!

I can't seem to get the music working in the game this way. Sound effects are fine, but the music is mysteriously missing.

What's your version of DOSBox/Mac OS X? I'll try at home if possible (I made Heroes work on Tiger, but I'm on Snow Leopard now).

the configfile of dosbox for this game might have wrong paths or filecasing.
I'm running Snow Leopard right now as well. I have DOSBox version .73 I believe. Did you have the music working when you played Heroes on Tiger?

Yes, I had music on Tiger with 0.72 (DOSBox version served with Heroes I) and 0.73 (according to my memory).
Edit:
I've tried on Snow Leopard.
I have music in Heroes I.
But you made me wonder... In fact, I've no music in Heroes II, nor game introduction!
Like Qbix said, it's a problem of path with '\' that Mac OS X doesn't understand.
Just replace '\' at the end of conf files by '/' (you should have 'imgmount d "./homm2.inst" -t iso -fs iso' instead of 'imgmount d ".\homm2.inst" -t iso -fs iso').
In game, be sure to have 'Music Type' mode setted to 'CD Stereo w/o Opera' or 'CD Stereo with Opera' cause mine was forced on 'Midi' (CD previously not being available) which doesn't play music.
Thank you for making me realise that I had no music in Heroes II =). I've updated the solution to take paths into account.

Haha, you're welcome, and thank you for helping me with that annoying issue. Finally I can hear music!
Great. However the game says I can not use CD music because my system (hardware...) does not support it. Bad linux!

If game says 'Unable to set up CD stereo music. Your CD player might be in use by another program, or your sound driver might not support CD stereo.', it could be the path problem discussed before. Check your dosbox*.conf for '.\' path.
hey everyone! I've just downloaded Heroes of Might and Magic II but didn't realize until after I downloaded it that it's an .exe file, and I'm using a Mac Mini. My operating system is Mac OS X, 10.6.3. I'm wondering if there's any way to install and play this download on my mac. I read the other things posted here, but couldn't figure out how to make it work. I'm hoping theres someone who can walk me through it step by step. I'm not super familiar with Mac or Dosbox, so detailed instructions would be helpful!!
Thanks!

Hey ,
I tried the instructions that Horus outlined for running heroes 1 but I get this error from the terminal after the process crashes.
I am running this on a mac book pro with snow leopard. Very frustrated. Thanks for any help or pointers.
