Does anyone know if it's possible to play Heroes 3 online outside of LAN? My buddy and I really want to be able to play each other online, but don't want to buy it if it won't allow it. Thanks for the help!

Yes, but you'll need the HD Mod and Horn of the Abyss unofficial expansion:

HD Mod adds an online lobby by itself, but you have to make a donation to create games. This restriction is removed once HotA is installed. If you get an antivirus warning when installing HD Mod, you can safely ignore it. The file is clean.
