so, i decided to play through all the Enroth titles in chronological order (from both the main RPG series, and the Heroes side). and was just asking for a little clarity..


so, i know Heroes 1 & 2 would come before M&M 6, with Heroes 3 Restoration of Erathia campaign coming before M&M 7.. however, I just wanted to ask for a bit of help on where Heroes 3s expansions, as well as the Chronicles titles would fit in chronologically in Enroths timeline..

There is no definite chronology agreed upon by all M&M geeks. The following is one suggestion, and the one I am following personally:

Notice that the HOMM2 expansion doesn't seem to fit anywhere in the timeline, but then it wasn't developed by NWC. Also, I've no idea if the HOMM4 expansions fit, but I don't think they do. The AB campaigns are largely independant but they all seem to occur after the main AB campaign (except for Foolhardy Waywardness which definitely occurs where I've placed it, per its ending). And finally, some could be easily swapped around; there's no mention IIRC of the real order in which Revolt, Master and Tree/Moon occur, but leaving Tree/Moon for last makes more sense in light of the end of Fiery Moon and how Clash of the Dragons starts. Oh and Swords of Xeen supposedly takes place right after WOX but it has some odd stuff that contradicts much of the M&M lore.

Just a note, even though Heroes 3 expansion "Shadow of Death" story takes place before the original "Restoration of Erathia", it's really better to play it after Armageddon's blade, the way it was released. It's sort of a flashback to events that happened before, and contains references to games that were released earlier but take place later. "

I'm pretty sure that Tarnum said something in Moon about already having encountered Elementals before, which would put Tree/Moon after Masters (the first time he encountered Elementals).

Also, SPOILER ALERT FOR MASTERS! Masters ends with Tarnum trading his robe and staff for furs and a sword and becoming a Barbarian again; the only other time we see the Immortal Hero as a Barbarian is in Tree/Moon, implying a link from Masters to Tree.

The Heroes Chronicles seem to have three "arcs" of consecutive chapters: Warlords/Conquest, Masters/Tree/Moon, and Clash/Sword.

The odd chronicle out, of course, is Revolt. While it must have taken place after Warlords/Conquest and before Heroes I, we don't have a narrower time frame for it. It could have taken place either before or after the Masters/Tree/Moon arc.

The only clues, if there are any, would be in Tarnum's frame of mind: Would his thoughts, words, and actions in Revolt make more sense for someone who has or has not already fought Vorr and the Elemental Lords?

If I remember correctly in RotB Tarnum is finding some monuments raised in times of his reign. Also, an old Witch Adamina seems to know who he really is, so I would say that no more than 100 years ticked by from Conquest of the Underworld. On the other hand, something is wrong with Masters of the Elements: Tarnum had returned from magical planes using the last Conflux, but for the first time they appeared in Armageddon's Blade...

No, this was explained in the game (in MotE). Basiclly Master of the Elements takes place ages before Armageddon's Blade, so by the time AB takes place, people have forgotten about them.

Come to think of it, didn't the Psychic Elementals wipe everyone's memory afterward?

I think Crag Hack or Crag the Hack is another example of recirculated names.

As Petrus said, there are several names that have been reused throughout the series, generally for the same type of character (Crag Hack is a barbarian, Sandro is a Necromancer). The characters aren't all supposed to be the same person. I seem to recall that MM9 occurred in some distant part of the world of HoMM4, but I couldn't swear to it. 9's connections to the rest of the series are pretty tenuous.

Might and Magic 3 takes place right before Might and Magic 7. The opening cut scene shows the adventurers from from Might and Magic 3 landing on Colony (the name of the world Enroth and Erathia are on.)

I don't know abour "right before". Can't say how long that journey took.

Chronology of HoMM is so confused. But I have a different question regards to it.
Actually I found a lot of contradictions in the plot of Heroes of Might and Magic 1. I read the game manual thoroughly several times and it seems like it is really have to do little with what happens in the game itself. That is how I see the campaign of Ironfist in the game:

1) Ironfist emerges somehow on some island in unknown land and starts to fight for the city of Gateway. Why is it that important to everybody? The game and the manual explain nothing. Did all of the heroes emerged in this realm from this city which have some gateway to another world? Or maybe Ironfist arrived there by ship from other continent? But the manual told us that he emerged from the portal escaping from some king Ragnar.

2) Are we a general of Ironfist or we are embodiement of the Ironfist itself? It seems like we are the Ironfist ourselves but why in the Hall of Fame there are names of the characters then? As far as I understood from manual we are Ironfist himself.

3) Who is the king or an emperor at the end of the game? Is it Ironfist himself or some unknown emperor? Manual said us nothing about some king or emperor which watches for our actions.

4) In scenario number four we conqured the continent of Enroth itself but when we start to fight the other lords we some lands which reminds us of different parts of Enroth. How can we fight the other lords and queen Lamanda on Enroth if we already conquared it in scenarion 4?

Can anybody explain it to me? Or maybe mr. Van Canehem wrote his own explanation somewhere?

I wouldn't lose my sleep worrying about it.
The fact that names are recycled between for example World of Xeen and HoMM 1, and that the characters are obviously not the same ones, is clear indication that the MM and HOMM were no originally intended to be set in the same universe.
I think it was only with MM6 and HoMM 3 that a conscious effort to make a unifying story line was made.

Fair, but I'm sure it didn't take generations which is how much time is passing between Heroes games.

They were traveling through space, so relativity could mean that more time passed for everyone else than it did for them.
