How do I host a multiplayer game? Just 2 players, is there anyway to do it without using any 3rd party software? Is port-forwarding feasible ?

Depends on which of the games you are referring to.

Heroes 3, for example, has a direct TCP/IP connection option.

Does mods apply to the "third party" statement? The easiest way is to use HD mod + Horn of the Abyss unofficial expansion if we're talking about Heroes 3:

They add a working online lobby and you can create and join games to your will.
It does have a lobby for regular Heroes 3 with the Shadow of Death expansion installed, BUT if you're going to host that and not the HotA mod, you need to pay them a donation.

Could it be possible to have the mods and still portforward my own server for HOMM3 ?
