Is there a time frame on this? I just bought the game but noticed that it seems like saves become incompatible after each update. Haven't gotten around to starting the game yet, so if the next update is soon maybe I'll just wait to start the game.

I've already included the first missing lib from the OP if that's what you want and released 1.5.1. Next bugfix patch will land around the end of December so go ahead and play it imo

Are older saves incompatible with 1.5.1? I just updated the game, but loading a save fails like this:

"Savegame is from a different level".

I.e. it's expected that each update will require starting from the beginning?

That's because the levels have been adjusted, some of them that is. As far as I remember I only updated the first and last maps, which one were you on?
You can manually restore your progress by changing the level and giving yourself gear via the console, you can see how here - https://steamcommunity.com/app/1072150/discussions/0/2530372519561985643/
