One reason I love GOG.com is their commitment to offering DRM-free versions of every game on their site. Some copy-protection methods, especially with video games, are outrageous and players deserve to have the choice of where and when they play the games they have spent their own money on.

In some cases, however, I do prefer Steam. I like adding games to my Steam library, I enjoy Steam achievements, and have recently started collecting Steam trading cards. Hammerwatch has full Steam capability, and I was wondering if a purchase of a game on GOG could instead be for a Steam Key rather than a DRM-free version.

Like I said before, it's about choice. This time I'd rather choose Steam. It won't stop me using GOG and it's not a deal breaker on my purchase of Hammerwatch, I just wanted to know whether it would be possible to trade in my DRM-free copy for a Steam key to get the Steam intergration I am after.

You can try asking the developer but as for us, we don't sell or give Steam keys here.
No problem. If you don't mind me asking, why is this the case? Is it just bad for business or is it a moral thing? I know plenty of people who would probably shop at GOG more if Steam keys were mad available as well as DRM-free copies.

Don't worry though, it won't change my decisions about the site. I love it, especially your innovation when it comes to sales. :D

It's a little bit of everything, really, but it's mostly that we are DRM free and other retailers...aren't? :)

Steam is not a platform, it's a digital distributor, and GOG is one as well. Obviously, Steam doesn't gift out GOG codes and GOG doesn't gift Steam keys.

Think about it... does Coca-Cola sell Pepsi as well, or the other way around?

It's a good analogy and I do understand, but I just ask because other places do offer both alternatives, eg, The Humble Bundle could pretty much be considered a digital distributor now, since they have a proper storefront, and they offer DRM-free downloads and Steam keys. In fact, they'll give you both if you want.
Also, in case anyone's interested, I asked the devs for a Steam key and they gave me one. Damned nice of them, I didn't even show them any proof that I'd bought the game at all!

Wow, that's really cool! It's guys like these devs that still give me some hope in the video game industry, seriously. It was an awesome stance on their part!
