Hi everyone. I've got Ashes of Malmouth and I'm putting lots of gameplay hours into it. The Illusionist NPC is neat but I'm sort of confused about how it works in terms of getting the transmog parts.
I know I get the looks of other items to use them. What I don't know is if I need to equip the item to copy its look, or just picking it up do the job.

Thanks in advance.

Bit late to the party, but...

Merely having had the item in your inventory once is sufficient to "unlock" the skin, which will be available to all your characters.

Generic skins (i.e., the "yellow stuff") are available from the start with no level restrictions. "Unique" skins like epics, monster infrequents, faction items and legendaries are locked behind their respective level requirements, i.e. if the original item required you to have level 50 to use it, then the skin will be available for your other characters once they hit level 50.

You still see the skins listed, but won't be able to apply them until you meet the level requirements.

Hi and thank you for answering my question.

Checked it and it's true. I registered my transmog/illusion looks once I pick the desired item, not necessarily equipping them.
I will mark your response as solution. Not that my question was a real problem, but I wanted to be sure about that. Salvaging and selling items before getting their appearance is all I wanted and didn't know if I was doing it right or losing them before this.
Have a nice day!
Does the illusionist picks the items that arestored in the vaulttoo?
In case of upgrading to the extension, a character may not pick those items in hisinventory

Can't test this, since, well, in order to place stuff in the vault, you need to have it picked up at least once. Soulbound stuff from the personal stash should be available after you load the respective character, stuff in the shared stash is transferable, anyways - you don't need to equip the items, merely having them had in the inventory once is sufficient.
