eolsunder: sorry but while gothic 2 is older and a basic game, at least the controls were working. You turned when you wanted to turn, you went forward and back, or strafed when you wanted to. There wasn't any wierd lag or the game just doing what you wanted. You didn't win battles by just button pushing either sorry. Sure when you were strong you could just hack your way through the weak foes (lizards, wolves, lurkers, etc), but especially against humanoids you really had to be good with the block button to be able to easily fight the weapon users (skeletons, warriors, orcs, etc). A skeleton would tear you up if you tried to just button mash him.
You had knowledge of how to fight something. And had tactics vs different foes. So far in 3? Yes i've just started but there isn't any sort of tactics to use at all. Many foes i can hit them and they are programmed to instantly repose and hit me back. There isn't any way to block those attacks. I fight someone in the arena. I hit them and instantly they hit me back. Unblockable! because im attacking ! There isn't any time to attack/block. It seems the tactics i see so far in this game is ....stay back and shoot them with arrows and don't get in close, and if you get in close, run like heck so you aren't in close ...
lol. Thats all i've seen on the forums also. combat sucks, shoot stuff with arrows, if you get in close run so you aren't in close. What kind of "melee" combat system is that lol. Especially on vanilla they say if you get in close, your stun locked by many opponents where oh well, you got in close, your dead. And they knock you down. Hey guess what, i can't knock them down, glad they just let the computer do that to me and i can't do the same. And don't get me started on fighting multiple opponents.
So, really dislike the combat in the game. And i've done what most people said. I just load up on arrows and shoot stuff at a distance when i can, saves that annoying close combat bad mechanics. WORKS! i agree with them all 100% so far. I do plan on playing as a melee character, im hoping there is actually something more to the game as i play where melee tactics actually have an effect and is something you can learn, but so far havent' seen any sliver of that. Going for a halbard large weapon build, i hear thats what to shoot for as a melee warrior, so we shall see. And hopefully playing as a melee warrior and fighting stuff up close, maybe the system will reveal itself to be something that i can't see yet. Who knows. Having played zillions of video games, i usually can spot a system that is good. Haven't seen anything in this to give me that feeling yet.
I never had any of the problems you just mentioned. Everything worked fine. Except early in the game (and that was the same with 1 and 2), I used arrows but rarely later on. Most of the issues people had with 3 were because the developers changed things and many didn't like that. I really think they changed the combat system because, in 2, it was so difficult to learn. Risen basically expands on the 3 sysytem. Now, I never liked the two-handed weapons so many liked - just too slow so I took way too much damage. As I said, stun locked can be broke by moving backwards. You really have to do this if they get a hit on you as it was very much over done. I enjoyed 3 a lot, just not as much as 1 and 2 mainly because the story just didn't click as well with me.
