I actually wasn't going to run it on my high-end gaming machine but tried installing Gothic 2 to check compatibility with 64-bit Vista. So far I haven't had any luck running Gothic 2. Gothic2.exe is listed in the Task Manager but game doesn't launch. I tried running as admin and in XP compatibility mode.

lol, yeah I really wasn't planning on playing G2 at on this machine but now I just got stubborn and wants it to work.
It is the same thing. I can not select OK when browsing for the destination folder.

Hmmm... try extracting the files from the installer directly using 7-Zip or the like. Discard the $PLUGINSDIR folders, but put the other files in the indicated locations (keeping the original files for rollback purposes).

Thanks for the tip. Didn't change anything though. I also tried running Vdfs32e.exe manually which does create the virtual file stuff but launching the game does nothing except the Gothic2.exe process showing up in the task manager.

Mhm, I remember something with Anti virus software, so you could try and deactivate it.

I have seen the issues with AV but currently I don't have any installed so that can't be the issue. I have thought of going to WoG but wasn't sure if there were radical changes to the GOG version. I do own boxed versions of Gothic 2 Gold and Gothic Universe (yeah, I just like the GOG concept a lot so I support it by buying stuff I already own) so I should check if the issue is consistent across the board.

You said you don't have an antivirus, but do you have a firewall or other security software? I had the same problem on Windows 7 64-bit, but after adding the installer to my firewall's safe files list and reinstalling in "installation mode" it now works perfectly. It's certainly worth trying.

No, It is basically a gaming only machine with no AV and other security related softeware. What do you mean by installation mode?
Btw. tried installing G2 Gold from the Gothic Universe package and it was the same thing.

Windows comes with its own firewall and antivirus defender program, make sure those are turned off as well before installing.

1.
Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Windows Firewall.
2.
Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.
Click Off (not recommended), and then click OK.
I advise disconnecting from the internet whilst your firewall is down, just to be safe.
