Hey everyone, im new here to GOG, and i do see that it doesnt list windows 7 under the supported os, but i was hoping if someone tried running gothic 2 on win7 64 bit with some success. Thanks in advance!

I haven't played much but it seems to be running well, except that the movies sometimes are not visible. Hitting escape skips them and the game will return when that happens.

This isn't necessary; editing the VirtualStore version of the file will override the Program Files one. In your case you'll find it here:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Gothic 2 Gold\system

Enter that in the address bar or Start Menu search box to be taken straight there. :)

True, it isn't necessary albeit it were a personal preference for me. I knew of both methods & consciously chose the way I did, hence why in my post I say "so it used the gothic.ini file in Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Gothic 2 Gold\system" although I were going to mention the method you have posted, being 4AM I just didn't think of posting the environment variable to AppData\Local seeing as I usually traverse there manually if I ever have need too.

It is a handy post for anyone else reading though as they now have an alternative.

Yeah, that fixed my problem as well. Well, one of them. Obviously, this will take a bit of tweaking to work right.

I had the problem where the game crashed/graphics-went-crazy when you left the tower at the start of the game. Installed the latest drivers... it worked! I was able to leave the tower and get eaten by a young wolf.

That's the first time installing new drivers ever fixed a problem for me.

Running Win7 64, ATI FirePro M7820

It runs, but it is very very crash-prone. It sometimes crashes after a couple minutes, sometimes runs for a few hours with no issues, but it definitely crashes a lot. I'm running on all max settings because running with lower settings didn't appear to improve the problem in brief testing. The instability existed in the original install and has persisted after adding elements of the Ironkeep community patch v2.10 (didn't do the .exe replacement though) and Vurt's texture patch. I sometimes get texture/surface flickering, but this doesn't seem to be linked to the crashes. Sometimes a few objects in the scene drop their textures completely, and the game almost always crashes shortly thereafter. A save made in this state is generally fine though, and if I've restarted the game, I can load it and the textures return.

I have to admit I've not had either of those problems, after some good hours of playing I've not had a single crash or graphical glitch as of yet. I'm on a HD6870 with Catalyst 11.4 drivers. I've got the game settings on max but I increased the amount of memory it uses before I started playing aswell... For what that is worth.

These lines in the gothic.ini are the values I changed too, I didn't change the OutTime values just the MaxByte values

zTexCacheOutTimeMSec=240000
zTexCacheSizeMaxBytes=1073741824
zSndCacheOutTimeMSec=10000
zSndCacheSizeMaxBytes=268435456

I figure despite having 8GB of RAM there is no point attempting to max it out, the reason being that 32-bit applications can only address 2GB of RAM, if on a 64-bit OS if you set the LargeAddressAware flag in the exe then the 32-bit app can usually address 4GB of RAM max. I felt the game didn't need that type of limit so limited the values to 1024MB & 256MB (in bytes) respectively.

For the record I've not installed any community patches for the game or anything for it besides the main installation with the expansion, plus the tweaks to the ini file. It looks like it may be hit or miss on how well it works depending on hardware/software configuration.

I could have sworn I checked this, but I apparently did not -- my crashes (described two posts up) appear to be caused by the "cloud shadows" setting in the extended settings, which is disabled by default. I'm not sure it even worked. Turning it off and everything else up to max works perfectly. (This has been tested with both the original v2.7 .exe, and the v2.6 from the ICP patch, which is needed for mods.)

Do I understand it right, that if I decide to run the game under my user account, all I need to do is tweak the VirtualStore copy of Gothic.ini and the game will NOT overwrite it after each run? So I do not need the bat file.

The VirtualStore file won't reset. You can continue to change controls and whatnot inside the game without overwriting any manual customisations made to it. :)
