I know it is an RPG..I think. But is it a First person RPG like morrowind? Or..what?
i've not really played any gothic (heh) games.
Can someone fill in the details a bit?
It is a third person action-rpg.
The setting is a medieval fantasy world with orcs, but without dwarfs and elves.
You are in a Valley that serves as a big prison colony and your goal is to escape.
The language is somewhat harsh and the World is more rude compared to Morrowind and other RPGs more like The Witcher.
Its a game every RPG fan should try.
The Gothic series has a has a huge fanbase here in germany.

It's like Morrowind, except third-person, with actual NPC's and world depth instead of mind-numbing emptiness.
NOt a big fan of morrowind eh? heh. I liked Morrowind myself :P
This sounds like a good deal for 10 buck. One reason I joined this site was to find older RPGs, so I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the Demo link, I'll download it now.

I enjoyed it too, but was a bit disappointed that the only major improvements over Daggerfall were graphics and sound. But yeah, if you like real RPG's, you should certainly try Gothic.

It's a great game, although the controls and fighting take a bit to get used to. Very worth playing through, even multiple times.
This is one of the most atmospheric RPGs ever made. It has full day-night cycle, and its beautifully executed. When you are walking through the forest at nights, looking for alchemical ingredients, and suddenly you hear a noise, turn around and notice waking up shadowbeast....YOU RUN!
Damn, I wanna play it again now after remembering how effing good it was : ).

You'll get yer chance tomorrowish ;)
I bought this game back in 2001 when it was released. What can I say? This is still my favorite game of all time. I have played it over 10 times. Later in the game you can choose between 3 fractions and each fraction has its own missions. So you can play this game at least 3x without getting bored. First time I played it took me over 40 hours to complete it.
Don't miss this game, you won't regret it.
My advise is to stick with it for at least a couple of hours before deciding whether you like it or not. When I played it for the first time, the controls in general frustrated me to no end and I nearly quit playing the game. But luckily I had nothing better to do, so I tried it one more time and stuck with it.... good thing I did, cause I could've missed out on one of the best games I've ever played.
Btw. the controls grow on you and after a couple of hours it's like second nature.

Coming from Germany I can only say it's one of the true classics here. The controls are indeed strange, to say the least, but it does not matter after about half an hour. BTW: Gothic 2 made the controls a fair bit better, while still reatining the "quirky" feeling :)
The graphics are way outdated, but actually, that's not as important as you may think. Well, being a GOG user you probably don't care about it too much, anyway.
Too bad I don't know about the English version. The German version has some poor voice acting, but the _text_ itself is quite cool. Everybody is (or considers himself) a bigshot, so everybody is bigmouthing around. It's really an immersive setting.
If you know any German, there's a very nice site to help you with anything about Gothic 1, 2 and the Addon for 2: http://mondgesaenge.de/ - Really, really nice work.
If you'd like any details about anything Gothic related, don't hesitate to page me. And FFS, stay away from Gothic 3 in any case.

Well I'll be downloading Gothic in the next few weeks, but for now I'm going with Sacred. Outdated graphics do not bother me in the least, honestly I prefer them sometimes to the "new" style of graphics.
I don't know german ;) I know achtung but that is about it heh. Mostly thanks to U2...

Actually, there's English content at mondgesaenge.de :) Give it a test drive!
Sweet I'll check it out.
