Well, it seems that Canthar is a royal bastard. I accepted the pass from him, got into the city and when I saw him again I did as he asked and happily framed the current weapons dealer (I forget her name). However, despite the fact that I wrapped the damn quest up on day one, it's day three and all of a sudden I find that cockhead has told the merchants that I'm an escaped convict (apparently because "I refused to help him", despite the fact that he's currently running the weapons shop thanks to me) and is demanding 500 gold to smooth things over with him.

A search of the forums has yielded no answers so I take it this isn't a particularly common problem. I'm not using any mods whatsoever.

Help!

Did you solve the quest and talked to Canthar again to get his "thank you, but no loot" after the quest?

I always avoid this quest at all:
+ I do all jobs for Bengar possible (except the pan quest)
+ Get the farmer`s outfit
+ And then I do the pan quest. He thinks I`m a farmer and I don`t get this quest

There are far better ways to get into the town, depending if you are playing NOTR or not.

If you are daring you can try to follow the path near the ork, avoid all enemies and make it to the wall of the harbor. Some balancing and you can make it into the town, impress Lares and get some nice XP from Lothar ;)

Radarkasten: Did you solve the quest and talked to Canthar again to get his "thank you, but no loot" after the quest?
I sure did. Several times in fact (to sell weapons).
You may have run afoul of the Chapter 2 trigger that is supposed to make this happen if you put him in jail in Chapter 1 (he gets out and causes this trouble). That or you spoke to Pablo and admitted that the poster is of you, which made him talk to Andre, which would (were Canthar in jail) have gotten him released and allowed him to exact this revenge. Either trigger might fail to check for you complying with his blackmail.

There are 2 ways to more effectively deal with him, avoiding the 500 gold penalty AND the moral unpleasantness of doing his dirty work.

First: if you avoid talking to him initially until you get farmer's clothes (it'll cost 10 gold more, since you can't complete the frying pan quest first if you do this), you can convince him you're a farmer, and the quest string never comes up; he won't bother you again.

Second (and more fun!): take his quest, but turn the jerk in to Andre. You get the same bounty, he'll go to jail, and if you chat with Sarah, she'll reward you with a comparable weapon and more XP. Then, visit him in jail and silence him - permanently!

The second can be a bit tough, as he's a good fighter (+300XP) and carries a longsword to jail (wtf). If you provoke him and run out, the guards will attack him, but you can't murder him in front of them, and if you pick up the sword, they'll consider it stealing. Still, you can let them do that, then once he's back up and returns to his cell (at 1hp and no sword), provoke him again, draw him to an out-of-sight corner, and kill him. (Warning: the jail guard can see you through the wall in some places, so you'll have to experiment. I found it worked well to get behind the little bookcase, so the corpse and I were both along the side wall.)

Another, somewhat dirty way of killing him (but then, he's a right bas*%$#) is to climb up the high post of the bookshelf - it's too small to move around on at all, just out of melee reach, and he can't climb up when you're on it - then fire arrows at him. Be careful that he's out of sight of the jail guard when the killing shot lands though - and even if he is, his sword might land somewhere the guard can see it, in which case taking it will be theft. Also, you'll need to hold the walk key the whole time - drawing a weapon, switching weapons, aiming, or firing ALL involve shuffling your feet and you will fall off if you're not holding the walk key.

Final note: he does not retain his store inventory, so you can't exploit this to double your money. Furthermore, he has a small random inventory if KO'd (a bit of food and ~17 gold), but nothing if killed. To get the absolute most out of him, you have to KO him first, which means something other than arrows for the final blow.

Perhaps you should have said the guards MIGHT attack him. Most of the time, even Andre just watches the action.
I started a new game and I didn't have any problems in that department this time. I'm playing as a royal bastard so I want to help him take over Sarah's stall (I also needed the pass as I gave the farmer's clothes to Greg).

I imagine it was just a one-off glitch of some sort. In any case, thanks for the help guys.

Giving the clothes to Greg doesn't mean you must use the pass. There are three other ways of getting into into city... :)

And you can even get credit for multiple ones!

Interesting - I never got no response at all - the prison guard always attacked one of us if the fight got out of the cell (or tried, at least - he ended up jumping onto a lamp and hanging out in the ceiling a few times . . .). I never took the fight as far as Andre though.

[However, Andre seemed to ignore a lot - I tried stealing from his chest and got attacked by the other guard in the room, then interrupted by Andre stating that I was wanted - but there was only one witness, so it seems he doesn't count even though he was facing me.]

Strange; not once out of some half dozen tries did the guards intervene. I wasn't strong enough to take him on so I just gave up and later paid the 500 when he got out.

Most interesting. Not sure what all controls the AI behavior in the city, I wonder if there's something different about our characters that caused the different response!

The stand-on-the-tiny-post + arrows will work for anyone though - I have not trained combat skills or stats at all, was using a shortbow, and had forgotten to change out of my civvies. Cheap but guaranteed win, although it might take 30-40 arrows. Cheaper than 500 and much more satisfying though! :-D

Maybe more fun would be a spell - perhaps a warg then run like bell until the guards stop chasing you. I just think it'd be a pain running around willy nilly to avoid him while pumping him full of arrows.

I've always had good results standing far back in the corner and shooting a single projectile at him to make him come out to attack me, resulting in the guard attacking him (and almost always winning), and then finally saving before going into the cell and finishing him off.

That's the point, you don't have to run!

You climb onto the post, where you are just barely too high to melee. Then you pump him full of arrows while standing still and watching him run around in frustration. You just have to hold the walk key so that you don't fall off when drawing your bow or aiming.

If you want a bit of extra coin, jump down and finish him with a melee weapon, loot the KO'd body, then finish him off however you like. (just be careful that you (and he?) are out of sight of the guard when finishing him off)

I originally nailed him with some fire spells from the corner, but I decided I didn't want to waste the scrolls, so I played around with different methods until I happened upon this delicious one.

Yup!

It's generalizable too - enemies can climb up things to get to you, but if the surface is small enough they can't get up there with you. Lamps may work, as NPCs sometimes hop up on them and stay a while. The key trick is holding "walk" at all times, otherwise any action may make you fall off.

(NPCs also have surprisingly good path-searching - I tried sniping at someone from a roof once and he went about 100 feet away to climb on a smaller roof, then ran across to me. So make sure there's not an alternate, easy path!)
