Interesting. Doesn't that interfere with your ability to knock out NPC's in town, or is the Master Epee (?) good enough for that?

I suppose a bow would make hunting rather easy.

Yes, a master sword is good enough usually, I just try to avoid Moe at the very beginning. A bow makes killing wolves and similar creatures easier because you don't have to get into melee range and, apparently, I suck at melee.
Ah, thanks for your input. I'll try it sometime - this won't be my last Gothic II playthrough, and I almost always play the mage (NotR Paladin sucks IMO, and only spells are truly overpowered late-game).

If I may be so bold, you really should try the 2-hander approach then - only 1-handers are frustrating to fight beasts with. With a 2-h, nothing outranges you, and Ulthar's Staff performs exceptionally well at 40 Str. Just dodge the charge attack using sidesteps/backsteps, then hit 'em until they're out of clawing/biting range to force another easily dodged charge.

Rinse, repeat. I killed Dragon Snappers who could 1-hit me this way without even wasting an Ice Block scroll. It took (exaggeration incoming) YEARS. The Black Troll is child's play in comparison.

Edit: I might even go as far as suggesting that Lockpicking should be ignored. I think it would make replays more enjoyable, allowing us to focus on more fun parts of the game. I hate lockpicking.

OK, I'll try it. I could use a different approach; all my characters seem to end up the same. I hate to give up something that I know works but that can a make a boring game.

You've inspired me to start another G2 game much sooner than I was planning. Thanks.
Then one last word of advice before I exit the topic (for now): Use the latest graphical enhancements: gog.com/forum/gothic_series/gothic_2_patchmod_installation_order_inc_classic_andor_pl

(Steps 1-8, the Classic Mod in step 9 is also interesting, setting game balance back to non-NotR values while retaining the new content, if you'd like to try that)

Edit: Updated the above guide, and submitted a partial rewrite to GameFAQs. I feel silly for not doing that sooner. Brain fart.

Also, if the D3D11 renderer gives you problems, simply remove its files to uninstall. However, In case of lag, try this: Using the Ctrl+F11 menu, turn off DynamicLighting and raise ShadowStrength to 0.60 to compensate for the darkness (higher value means brighter shadows).

DynamicLighting can especially cause lag when magic is selected, most noticeable in Seeker fights.

It was tricky, but fun and rewarding. Even if the endgame was basically me summoning my Demon and letting it kill everything. :P

oldmanleschi: How did you get the rapier early? I haven't seen it in any of the merchant inventories.

lordhoff: Now your testing me :) ---- I cannot remember exactly (haven't played for quite a while). I have this faint memory that I found it somewhere. I'll see if I can find anything to kick start my memory. All I know is that I kept adding to my dexterity so I could use it (then I built no more dexterity after that). It wasn't there at the very beginning stages but one has to build a lot of dexterity to use it and that takes a while. I still remember using it by at least the third chapter and the far side of the island. As a servant of Inos, I decided that using the all-powerful claw was a no no - the rapier worked quite well and didn't interfere in my studies of magic.

I'm still looking; thinking it is in one of the bandits' camps near the mercenaries but not sure.

Well, I give up. I found references to it but not where it was found. I guess I'll have to play thru again to remember where and I'm currently in the middle of other games. Just keep looking - you'll find it.
If my memory serves me well, you'll find the Fine Rapier with the two trolls near Grom's place.
