Curunauth: Most of the files are straight replacements, but what did you do with the ou.* files in
_work\Data\Scripts\Content\Cutscene\
?

The original folder has Ou.dat and Ou.lsc, but the RAR file has ou.bin . . .

This thread suggests removing/renaming the .dat file and renaming the new ou.bin to Ou.dat
http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/archive/index.php/t-817290.html
I haven't gotten to the location where people noted that there was a bug though (Vatras saying "let us summarize" and getting a sub in German), so I'll have wait to see what does what.

fjdgshdkeavd: That thread describes a problem with patch 2.00. The patch linked in this thread should be version 2.10, which was rewritten from scratch, and in my experience, does not require such tweaking.

(I backed up my work folder and then just dumped the new files into their appropriate folders. I did NOT rename the ou.bin file, and I'm pretty sure that Vatras' subtitles DID appear in English. There was some other place in the game where I got a german subtitle, though.)
Yes, it's for a different version, but it is in fact applicable to what we did (using the _work updates without replacing the .exe) - at least according to that thread, the v2.6 .exe uses a .bin sub file, while the v2.7 one uses .dat.

I haven't experimented with removing each file to see if things break or disappear; interestingly, the .lsc file seems to have the same content, only in a cleaner format with human-friendly line breaks and indentation.

I've not yet gotten a german sub, but I'm not very far into the game. I did get through that part of Vatras though.

**check check check**

Ah! it seems that the Vatras conversation is indeed a valid check: neither the Ou.lsc nor the original Ou.dat file contain the sub "Good, let us summarize:"
Instead, for that audio, they have "Gut, fassen wir mal zusammen:"
- so, if you had the original .dat and the new ou.bin (not renamed), and when Vatras said "let us summarize", the sub was in English, then the change is unnecessary. I don't have a save that far back to test, though.

--EDIT--
Confirmation:
If you have only the .bin, all dialogs fail. If you have the .bin and the .lsc, a .dat is generated (in VirtualStore if you're in Win7) - the content of the generated .dat matches the .lsc (German "summarize").

Under some circumstances, editing the .dat file causes the game to crash at startup, but if you have just the .dat file and keep the character count the same, it is possible to insert test comments; having done this, I've found that the content of the .dat controls the dialogs.

SO! if there isn't a .dat, one is generated from the .lsc, and if there is a .dat, it is used; .bin files are ignored. Unless you replaced the .exe with the v2.6 (as the 2.10 installer does automatically), you're using the old sub file until you rename the new .bin to .dat.

Thanks for testing! I uninstalled the game, and cannot verify. What do you mean that "with only the .bin, all dialogues fail"? I confess I finished the game awhile ago and uninstalled, and my memory could be incorrect.

EDIT: nevermind this last bit, I'm certain that you're right. You need to rename that stuff or use the 2.6 exe if you want the subtitle fixes. The other elements of the patch work are unaffected by which exe you use. Good job catching that!

No probs. :-)

Well, just to answer the question, what I meant was that if you have only ou.bin in that folder (no .dat or .lsc), then you can approach NPCs and initiate dialog, but as soon as you choose something to say, the dialog immediately exits without anyone saying anything. This makes some sense, given that those files list not only the subs, but also the audio files to use. [OTOH, the dialog trees are clearly stored elsewhere at least in part, so I'm not sure why it doesn't just jump to your next response choice. Probably some caught internal error.
Just getting around to playing G1, and tried texture/FPS upgrade after a few false starts. Looks great, highly recommended! FPS unlock was almost alarming after being dialed in to xcom and star control for the past month. Very smooth.

Win7 x64

Thanks for the info Chautemoc.

Glad it's appreciated.
Started GOTHIC 1, my 2 cents:

If, rather, WHEN you get stuck on a mountain/slope try pressing esc, then selecting QUIT GAME (dont click it, just select it) then hit esc again, the game will usually fix itself.
Sometimes try saving (new slot to be safe) then reloading that save, will fix the slop bug as well (and most npc chasing you will stop for some reason).

If you cant press esc (the game wont let you) then just wait, yes it's slow, but the sliding up, or down, usually up, lol, will stop.

Also, a small exploit, if you are falling from a deadly height, hold a strafe key, and the avatar will "levitate" down, You can use this to get around the world faster by jumping off cliffs, or just use it selectively when the game has you unfairly stuck,

Also acrobatics is generally useless and sometimes crashes the game if you use it to get around faster, and enter a new area.

Does anyone know a good link to the .rar file for the manual install of the Gothic 2 community patch? All the links I've found seem to be dead and the installer doesn't seem to work for me.

Thanks.

The link in this thread seems to be working fine.
OH MY GOD

I'm 20 hours in, and I just figured out how to put away a torch!!!

You don't need to run into water so it "auto puts it away" like an idiot.

All you need to do is open your inventory, select your torches and press UP+USE again!

D'Oh!!
Arkose,

Thanks for the reply, I must have tried that link 10 times yesterday, but it does appear to be working now. Thanks again.
also, M opens world map (once you buy one)

and FIX MOUSE ISSUE IN GOTHIC 1:

If you set the mouse to max sensitivity in Gothic 1, and it's still too slow for you, edit the GOTHIC.INI

and set the mouseSensitivity=1 from 1 to 5 or even 10, I found 3 to be a nice balance.

Remember, the games sensitivity isn't modern, so it might feel like you're increasing the acceleration instead of the sensitivity, but it definitely will be easier to turn/look around, etc.

Also,

If you get this crash:

B:VFILE: Err: -2: Can't find file:_work\data\music\dungeon\itrw_2h_orcstaff_01.mrm code:255

This is a known Bug in the Gothic releases from 1.04d to 2.5 (fixed in 2.6).

Simple workarounds (might help): Disable the sound and the music (Gothic.ini), start the game, load the savegame, and save it to another slot
or load another savegame before loading the savegame which raises the error

From the looks of it, I wished I played the game with the mods, without listening to the OP, honestly.

I would recommend the Gothic 3 Community Patch be added to this list of patches. Besides the GOG.com staff confirming it will work with the GOG version of Gothic 3, it also adds many, many bug fixes, graphics upgrades, and performance enhancements.

Thanks for the mouse tip. The other item is a technical issue and won't be included.

From what another thread here stated, the GOG version is already patched to the Community patch ver 1.6 so only the newest version (1.74) might make a difference.

Is it me, or the Ironkeep patches are discontinued (there doesn't seem to be any traces of Ironkeep studios anywhere anymore)?

I've heard of another fan-patch for Gothic 1, but it's in German (figures). Is there any plans to make it work with the English version?
