When I press M to bring up the map nothing happens. Do you have to buy a map or something?

Yes, you must buy a map (In G1 there are some certain traders in each camp with maps, in G2 it`s Brahim in the harbor) first. Afterwards you can choose it in your inventory. M will always bring up your last chosen map. There are different maps available
