Khalaq: Thank you for being so helpful, guys. With the information you gave me, I decided that Risen was worth getting, after all, so I decided to purchase it.
It turns out, however, that Steam's version (on sale for $15) has an activation limit of 3 machines. There is rumor that one activation is renewed every 45 days, but there is no evidence to support that. More importantly, however, is the fact that Steam has apparently run out of activation keys. That is to say, you may purchase Risen during this weekend at sale price, but you cannot play it due to a lack of activation keys. No, there is no warning given to prospective buyers, but Steam says they are awaiting more keys from the publisher.
The publisher, Silver, is away for the weekend. How convenient....
In conclusion, I do not wish to spend my money on a game I won't be able to play. The DVD version has only a disc check, but it is difficult to come by in the U.S. Only a few stores still sell it, and they sell it for about $40.
It looks as though I will have to be patient and wait for a re-release of the game.

Dammit -as a trusting buyer I assumed steam would be able to provide the software they sold me. I bought Risen on that deal, haven't tried it yet, but if Steam don't deliver I will be seriously pissed off.
Thanks for the head up. Hopefully it will delay others.
