When I click on the Gothic 3 icon to start the game, I get this message:

I've deleted and reinstalled 2 times now with the same result.

Install the latest DirectX End-User Runtimes. This will install the missing files.

While that did work, I'm now stuck with a black screen that does not go away during the boot.

However, this is a different problem unassociated with the problem you helped me fix.

Yeah, I've read about how it does that. But with my computer, it just sits there on the black screen...forever. The other night, I left it on all night while I slept. In the morning it was still on the black screen.

What's funny though, is it shows it's still computing in the task manager.

Oh well, just a bug with my computer I suppose. But thanks for helping me get it to that point.

Just figured it out.

You pointed me in the right direction, but Direct X was not launching automatically. Once I launched it manually, the game started in less than 15 seconds.

Is there also a solution for Windows 8? Because the System Reqirements for DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) does not include Windows 8.
