Okay as stated in the title, my copy of Gothic II Gold will not run.
General info: I do _NOT_ use the GoG-Copy of the game, I actually got an old gold-version from a few years back.
I use Windows 8 x64 Upgrade (meaning the upgrade-version from Win7, I believe it's just W8 home).

Installation works without any kind of trouble, but when I try to start, the application appears in the running tasks for about 3-6 seconds, then closes itself without an error message. I do not find an error-report within the folder, so no easy way to tell what's happening.

I tried killing processes, but after I kicked everything, there still was no effect, except that wy system crashed after killing the wrong process.

I tried installing patches, fixes as described in the gog wiki, running in compatibility mode, with and wthout administrator privileges, I even installes a virtual box which merely had the effect that the game started but had no other graphics except the FMV, which I take to be a problem of missing emulated 3d emulation.

By now I am quite frustrated, especially since almost every information I get suggests that very few people have any problem running the game in windows 8.

If anyone has any more suggestions, by now I am willing to try almost anything.

Did no one read or does no one know? =)

Anyways, updates follow...

GothicStarter is Rejected by my system, seeing as the only download I found on worldofgothic.com is rejected by my AV-Software.

Compatbility modes by now all tested out - W95 to W7, Administrator and no, 640x480, same inside the box using XP, no change whatsoever.

If anyone has ANY suggestions, I'd be happy to try it out.

Have you investigated whether your antivirus is interfering? The best way of testing this is to completely remove it (making sure to restart afterwards). If your antivirus is to blame you should be able to get it working alongside the game by reinstalling it and then adding Gothic.exe / Gothic2.exe to its whitelist (or trusted files or whatever it calls that feature) and also to the exceptions for its sandboxing/virtualisation/etc. protection (if it has one).

If the antivirus isn't to blame you could try GothicStarter by adding its files to the exceptions in the same way; there is also the Gothic II report version which has reportedly fixed launch problems in some cases.

This is what got Gothic II Gold Edition (GOG) running in Windows 8 x64:

Install game. Reboot.
Set Compatibility Mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
Install Application Compatibility Toolkit. Open and Install Gothic-borderless.sdb (fixes window border issue).

If you are using Logitech products, like I am, then the solution that I found that worked was to exit the keyboard or mouse application that is sitting in your system tray (bottom right corner of screen). For some reason Gothic 1&2 will not run until I do this. Weird, but an easy fix.
Well... none of the above worked. By now, I am using a VERY unstable method. VmWare Player can (and will) start without any problems but often crashes. But, generally speaking, it works.

And yes, I tried application toolkit as well, but this only produces black screens with sound, or starting screens without sound.
