AllenWhite: I was relying on the instructions in this thread to run the game, but I found that Google Chrome was the problem. If Chrome isn't running, Gothic II starts with no problem.

I'm on Win7 64 bit.
ha!
thank you!

I have Win7 64-bit and I had same problem. I also had logitech mouse and setPoint software. When I closet setPoint program gothic started and runs fine.
I guess I'm very late to the party, but, oh god, Gothic 2 is more fragile than some tropical orchid to run on Windows 7. After a lot of digging through forum threads and error reports I've found a relatively good way to launch it. I call it a Gothic roulette.
You launch Gothic and open your Task Manager. Now, start randomly ending processes of programs you've launched. Eventually, you'll either crash your PC or Gothic will magically pop up.

But you can improve your chances to win in the Gothic roulette in two ways:
a) by starting Gothic twice and then killing rundll.exe. This increases your chances to start Gothic and not crash your PC by 80%.
b) by installing SystemPack. This increases your chances to start Gothic and not crash your PC by 95%.

For me, it's Logitech SetPoint. Simply disabling that from the task manager allows both Gothic 1 and 2 to run, and this works on both Windows 7 and 8.

Reinstall or/and update the drivers for your mouse.. Then install the SystemPack, It fixes bugs in the driver Set Point and etc..
