I recently installed the GOG-version "out of the box" and noticed a rather low frame-rate along with a "brownish" flickering of the entire screen inside Xardas' tower - and then later on in the nearby farmhouse.

The flickering seems to be happening only indoors (movement-dependent, i. e. as you run around inside).
The frame-rate is a constant issue, though, which gets worse when you look at complex things from afar (like the town of Khorinis).

Perhaps I'm just spoiled, but the frame-rate moves between 35 and 45, which feels rather choppy. And it's strange to happen with such an old game, especially since Gothic 1 (which uses the same basic engine) easily reached the 90 and even triple digits for me.

I play the game in windowed mode (as otherwise the game locks to a black screen immediately on startup). I had read that this happens due to the two-monitor setup I use, but that turned out to be wrong: Even when I switched to a single monitor, starting in full screen/without windowed mode, would lock to a black screen. So windowed mode is a must, it would seem.

I haven't found any solution for the indoors flickering and am mostly hoping it's rare enough not to bother me, but if any of you know of a fix for this specific type of flickering, I'd be happy to try it.

As for the frame-rate, I've tried various tips from around the internet:

I've tried installing the "System Pack", but when starting the game it just gives me an error about Gothic 2 being the wrong version and the update not being in use. Perhaps I need a special, GOG-version compatible setup? Anyway, as expected with that error message, I didn't notice any differences in-game.

I've tried reducing some of the game's own settings, like the cloud shadows and blur effects, no changes.

I've tried forcing off VSync via the NVidia control center, but that didn't affect anything.

I've tried forcing my graphics card to "work harder" (see also: https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/articles/212453469-Gothic-2-Gold-Edition-Workaround-for-low-framerate-stuttering-on-ATI-cards?product=gog ) on the game through the NVidia control center, but that only lowered the frame-rate to something between 15 and 20 (yes, I don't have an ATI Radeon card, but I was willing to try it anyway).

I've tried fiddling with memory buffers in the Gothic.ini (increasing the numbers for the available memory to be in line with my RAM), but that didn't seem to have an effect, either.

And that's about it. Nothing I tried so far worked. I'm sure it's playable, but Gothic 1 just feels so much more responsive and enjoyable with the higher frame-rate to me, yet I'd really love to play Night of the Raven.

If any of you have additional things I could or should try to fix either the flickering or boost the frame-rate (60+ would be my goal), then I'll gladly try those...

What is your screen resolution?

Try to install dgVoodoo 2 libraries to "system" sub-directory of the game path.

You can play using OpenGothic engine instead.
I'm afraid I'll need more info on how to attempt these. I've downloaded both but can't seem to use them.

As for your question: I run it at 1920/1080 (although slightly down-scaled on my second monitor because of screen border issues; without any such things on the main monitor, though).

dgVoodoo

1. Unpack archive to any directory
2. Copy all files from "/MS/x86/" sub-directory
3. Paste these files to "( Gothic 2 path ) / system" directory, where "Gothic2.exe" is located

If "ddraw.dll" already exists, make a backup before overwriting.

***

OpenGothic

1. Unpack archive to any directory
2. Create shortcut to "Gothic2Notr.exe" with parameter "-g ( Gothic 2 path )"

For example:
"C:\Games\OpenGothic\Gothic2Notr.exe" -g "C:\Games\Gothic 2"

Or simply run this in command line.

Perfect, thank you so much! The dgVoodoo tip immediately worked and I can even run it in full-screen now. Framerate is 100-120. The brownish flickering is gone, too! There is only a tiny issue remaining now, in that the BINK videos flicker like hell, but since almost everything in Gothic 2 is in-game graphics from what I remember, I really don't think that'll detract from the experience. :-)
