I just got G2 from here and I want to replay it after several year break - this time with dex based Bow Paladin.

I have two questions:

1. does the gog version need any patch or is it k to play it as it is?

2. Lares - I can remember some issue with this guy and the Lets go option - basically iirc all I need to do is wait untill i shall go to water mages and then and only then use lets go option - i should not have him escort me anyplace else befor we go there, right?

1. GOG version is all I use, works fine. (you still need to update the exe to use mods though, as with vanilla).

2. right. That's the safe way. I never had that bug but I've heard it reported.

Depending on which patch GoG uses, the newer (Been a while since I played so I hesitate to say newest) patch was as much a mod as a patch. There are settings that change how creatures fight, etc. I like the changes but, it may be a bit different then you expect if you played before so, if it is the 1.75 or later patch (I think), you might consider turning these features off. Also, depending again on when you played it, the GoG version has an added area and the creatures are tougher to kill. Again, improvements IMO but I think the GoG version loads with the add-on and I'm not sure how easy it is not to have this if you want the old experience.

Hopefully my old brain isn't muddled right now and I am not completely wrong ----- memory, I used to remember what that was. :)

I just installed it last night but I will get down to playing it from Monday on as on a business trip atm :(

IIRC, the version of my G2 is 2.something, like 2.0.... I just cought a glimpse of it.

I played G2 very long ago but there is something in this game that makes me come back to it every decade or so ;) unlike most moder games that for me lack something I cannot quite put my finger on...

Btw, since G3 popped up - I saw it on gog too, is it playable as it is or it will be a pain to get it going? I can remmber it gave me a major headache back in the day and I did not finish it.

That's what I was afraid of; I get confused after I stop paying a short while. Thanks (from both of us, I am sure) for the clarification. I'm in the middle of a five game series but afterwards it'll be time for a short return to Gothic - probably "I" though.

G2A is usually distributed in one of these three versions - 2.6 DE, 2.6 PL (retail only, I think) and 2.7 EN. The only real difference is the language, though, and it's possible (and even necessary for playing most G2A mods) to change 2.7 to 2.6. Shouldn't matter if you aren't going to play mods. Clean G2 (without NotR) is v1.3, I think. Yes, it is. It's patched with the Community Patch, so it's definitely more than playable. I think that GOG uses only v1.74, though, but you can easily patch it to the latest version, 1.75.14. The patch is downloadable from Mad Vulture Games (who also developed G3:FG Enhanced Edition), (or directly [url=http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_478.htm]here) and many other sites.

But I had some problems with patching gog games one. MM6 ran ok but when patched it would not launch.

Is it necessary to patch G3 to enjoy bug free experience or gog ver. is enugh?

Most of the bugs were fixed by CP 1.5/1.6. Patches after 1.70 mainly add new functionalities and improve gameplay and game mechanics.

The full CP changelog is here, so you can see what 1.75(.14) introduced. Probably the most important things not included in GOG version: For me personally, quicklooting itself would be enough to install 1.75, but it's your call. I'd advise you to at least try updating it, though. I've never had any trouble patching G3.
