Hi there,

I've gone through the posts here, but can't seem to find any similar problem, hence the new post.

When I try to start Gothic, it appears to be loading for a few seconds, but it end nothing happens (tried both the shortcut as well running the .exe file directly). When I check the Open task manager (or whatever is its name, the thing you get to via ctrl+shift+esc), I do find GOTHIC.EXE in the processes, but can't do anything with that other than stopping it.

Any ideas what might be the problem? I've played quite a few older games from GoG on this particular comp, and there were no issues whatsoever.

The problem with Gothic 1 is that GOG never optimized it for newer computers. However, I did just try to launch the game myself with my Windows 8.1 PC and it started how it should be. Your problem might be your antivirus. You could also try to launch the game as administrator if you have not already tried it.

Have you seen this thread? AFAIH, SystemPack usually deals with the most of technical problems like this.

(That thread itself is for G2, but SP is both for G1/G2.)

Here's what I did for an almost flawless play through.

1) Set Gothic to WinXP SP3 compatibility
2) Go to www.worldofgothic.com
3) Download and install gothic1_playerkit-1.08k.exe
4) Download and install g1classic-systempack-1.1.exe
5) Enjoy Gothic :)

That's all there is to it. Enjoy :)

Thanks for the replies.

I can't really tell which of them would have helped, for the problem solved itself. I threatened the installed game with a new installation, which of course did not help :) However, when I actually downloaded it again, I thought of giving it one last go before uninstalling the game to install it again and, somehow, it worked, and has worked ever since.

I made no changes to the anti-virus nor anything else within the system or the game itself, so I have no clue what was wrong with it.

Are you sure the problem has solved itself? Just out of curiosity, but how long did you play the game for? I'm asking because I had the same problem you did but then the game suddenly seemed to fix itself. However, without using the setup in my last post, the game seemed to work fine but then the game will suddenly freeze.......constantly. Sometimes I would only be playing for 5 minutes but at other times I could play for 30 minutes before the game freezes. If you find you are having freezing problems, just look at my last post. Doing all of those steps solved the freezing problem for me.

It has. I've now played for close to 20h of game time, and it has never failed to run.
It doesn't freeze either, although I did have two crashes so far(some violation error), and I occasionally get other weird bug, such as that no tabs, name plates or even the main menu shows....which is as bad as freezing, since the only possibility is to kill the game through the task manager.

So I'd definitely recommend your solution, if not for the failing-to-run bug, then for most of the other possible bugs out there.

In that case, I'm glad the game works fine for you now :). The reason Gothic doesn't load up properly is because a background process is preventing it from doing so. IIRC it is one of the svchost.exe processes. When I tried to find out which one it was, I usually ended up crashing my OS :P.

Still, if you play Gothic 1 again on a different computer, you'll know how to fix it if it doesn't solve itself next time around. Have fun with Gothic 1, it really is an awesome game but after 20h of game time, you probably figured that out already :)

Aye, I vaguely remember trying killing those processes as well, the previous time I tried to run the game(Gothic is one of those games I somehow happen to play every few years :) ), but I ended up much like you did :D

Yea, next time around I'll just install the patches first.
