I'm pretty new to the gothic series, and I just came to the old mine for the list from Ian. I tried mining the rocks scattered around the mine, but my character just stands there not getting anything from it? Is this on purpose?

I'm not sure if it was intentional but you can hack away at the ore all day and nothing happens (other then he without a name getting blisters :) ). I'm playing Gothic 2 now and one can mine and can learn better techniques (less chance of gold splinters flying everywhere and more chance of multiple gold nuggets. I haven't tried mining for magic ore, though. I suspect mining just fell between the cracks in Gothic1.

Ore mining is one of several interactions that serve no actual purpose in either game. The Gothic II: Night of the Raven expansion adds gold mining but magic ore still can't be mined.
Okay thanks :)
Would've been too easy to just let the character stand there for an hour and be able to buy everything in the game, haha

Just as an add on, Gothic2 limits how much gold can be mined - it says something like, nothing left to mine and you have to move on to another vein of which there are few that are free. I figure one can get around 500 gold coins from the nuggets.
