Create demons - best undead dragon slayers around. Where; sorry, I don't remember but with normal exploration, you should be able to find a few.

There are two kinds of spells in G2: scrolls and runes. All classes can use scrolls, but only mages can use runes. Paladins have I think 4 runes they can use.

Transformation scrolls can help you sneak through areas or kill things, but there are only a few of them, and you can't loot bodies while transformed. Damage spells are alright, but they're not that great until near the end of the game.

Mages have 6 circles of magic and, assuming you're playing NOTR, you can only learn one circle per chapter. This means you can't learn the most powerful circle 6 spells until chapter six at the end of the game.

I find summoning runes to be the most handy, but everybody's playstyle is different. While you can find a few runes lying around, for the most part your mage will have to spend learning points to learn whatever spell you want.

Even when you have many runes, the scrolls are generally better because they use far less mana IMO but, there aren't enough of them to depend on. The demon rune/scroll I mentioned is a summoning type.

As you say, the scrolls are limited in number. I assume OP wants to have multiple uses of a spell, so knowing there's a difference between runes and scrolls is important. Plus, he won't be able to regularly summon demons until late in the game. For a mage, I'd say that two skeleton runes are very useful. And if he likes to melee fight, Ice Block is also great.

Yeah, there are several good spells and it depends - I just had a dilly of a time beating those undead dragons until I discovered (with help :) ) how well demons work against them. I hope I'm not confusing games but I recall the skeletons being excellent vs trolls. Even the trusty fire ball/ice lance spells were useful against lesser enemies like goblins and are low cost in mana. The biggest problem i had as a mage was running out of mana potions prior to the end fights due to killing too many orcs in the valley of mines.

I didn't have much trouble with the dragons. A bunch of summons tears them down easily. Get a half dozen skellies or zombies and your'e good to go.

The low mana problem I consider a design flaw. You can't be a pure mage in the game, and I strongly object to that. A while ago I used the console to give myself a huge mana pool to let me play a "true" mage. On my next play, I'm going to experiment with mana regen as that may be more balanced.
thx!
