lordhoff: I read a quote from one of the leaders of PBs... Anyone else hear this? Anyone know if it is true?
According to JoWooD Piranha Bytes retains some rights to the brand; JoWooD's rights extend at least as far as Gothic 5 but they don't say what happens after that game.

JoWooD's remains have been bought up by Nordic Games "with the plan to reboot lots of games, IP's and of course communities". They have inherited JoWooD's publishing rights to the existing Gothic games but we don't yet know whether they also maintain JoWooD's rights to new entries in the series.

Prior to these acquisitions Nordic Games' product catalogue appears to have consisted entirely of low-budget Wii music and racing games, which doesn't exactly fill me with confidence...

So it seems JoWood and PBs have a different take on what the contract says. Interesting. I guess we just have to wait. Meanwhile, I guess I should go find a copy of Risen (and Gothic III - I like to do things in sequence). I'll see if I can't refind the site and post it's address here - people here might find it interesting and speculative.

EDIT: OK, here it is: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-05-why-gothic-dev-piranha-dumped-jowood

Found another from another founder of PBs that says that perhaps his comments should not be taken at face value. All very interesting (at least to me).

I thought Forsaken Gods was a shocking game, really bad ..the bugs and terrible story were the worst parts of the game for me .
I work in the software industry and what never ceases to amaze me is how some games can be released without proper Q&A (Quality and Assurance ) testing by some Publishers
I'm not sure if it’s because certain Publishers just think us gamers will accept anything and they know there is no legal recourse your average gamer is going to take ?

I would skip this game . For me Risen was the next spiritual successor to Gothic 3 ,not Forsaken Gods ...and I don't even consider Arcania part of the Gothic world .
I am looking forward to Risen 2

I've recently replayed Forsaken Gods with the enhanced edition patch. Whilst the graphics and music remain excellent since they are a straight carry over from G3 (albeit with the residual stuttering you still get with G3 CPT) the overall storyline, quests, NPCs and dialogue have not been touched by the EE patch, other than to correct bugs. Which means the game remains awful. For example:

Almost everyone in FG is "crazy". Crazy alchemist, crazy birdman, crazy man who thinks he is the son of Rhobar II...and being crazy they have these stupid dialogues with idiotic voices. Myrtana has had all sensible people removed and replaced by tedious insane equivalents. By the end you will probably want to kill every NPC in the game.

Orcs often talk with human voices in FG and have ridiculous names like "Urbanus" (like the Pope, right?). Regrettably the EE patch removed the character called "Ngaio" (...you know...like the crime writer...I'm sure there are lots of Ngaios living in Myrtana)

Most of the game is composed of stupid fetch/kill quests not fit for the hero of Myrtana. "I can't sleep because a crazy birdman comes onto my shed roof at night and spreads birdseed on it which attracts birds...please kill him". Nameless: "Such crazy birdmen are not fit to live in the new united Myrtana! He must die." Something like that anyway.

Oh and the "take my wife shopping in Faring" quest. Nameless goes shopping, I mean really? And then she wants to buy booze and full body Nordmarian armour. Armour? Why in gods name does she want to buy armour? Nothing makes sense.

Oh and the pacifist orc quest. "Hey we're hippy orcs! Please kill 5 waves of paladins with us so we can preserve our peaceful existence!"

Worst RPG ever.

I feel nauseous just reading these examples... are they examples of the worst of the worst in it, or are they the norm for this?!

Just out of interest I've started watching a FG walkthrough here
