In Windows XP:
After running the game for the first time in Direct3D mode, it ran fine up to the point that the intro movie finished playing. The game then crashed with a "the program needs to close" dialog. I tried restarting the game, but all I got is a crash and the dialog message again (this time with an immediate crash upon opening the program). I've tried using the software renderer and with hardware zoom disabled. I've also tried restarting my computer. Nothing has worked so far :( I didn't even get a chance to try it!

I have the same problem. Try just to skip the intro movie though. That worked for me.
Yes, same issue here.
All you have to do is restart the game and then skip over the movie and you will then be playing one fine game.
Just remember, that the game has little puzzle in it that you need to figure out. there is one very much in the first few minutes of the game.
Enjoy.
The problem is that when I do try to restart the game, it crashes immediately after it's opened. It doesn't even have a chance to play any videos again.
Try to uninstall all your codecpacks and install CCCP only (cccp-project.net) along with quicktime alternative.
Then uninstall the game and reinstall it.
It works no problem with CCCP on my PC, although I have other problems (graphics related).
I already have CCCP and Quicktime on my computer. I uninstalled the other codec packs along with CCCP (didn't seem to want to work anymore) and then reinstalled CCCP and Gorky 17. No effect :( Restarted computer yet again with no effect, too.
Hmph, oh well, I just tried running it on my laptop instead (also has Win XP), and it worked fine (no codec packs installed) after the initial crash from the first time I tried running the game.
Hopefully GoG will have some sort of official fix for this.

Hello,
Start the game again and let the error occur again. Click on details and let us know which DLL is causing the crash. You can try to search the DLL file and rename it to something temporary. It worked for me atleast. I had fun_avcodec.dll crashing the game, I renamed to to fun_avcodec_bak.dll and it worked; even played the intro.
gives me a list of 37 modules with 37 dll files causing problems...maybe you're talking about something else?

Well, it's not like that, the game misses some codecs, but it might sometimes happen that some already installed codecs are making some troubles with videos and sound in games.
You may try to rename AVI folder (that one which comes along with gorky17.exe file) and try again.
I renamed the avi folder located in the game directory. No changes it seems :-/
I have a similar problem. I got Gorky 17 to work exactly once, but after exiting and restarting, I get the "Gorky17.exe encountered problems and needs to close" error message even after rebooting the computer.
Funny thing is, if I run Gorky 17 as a different user, then it starts up fine, but after exiting and restarting, I get the same error again. So to play this game, I need to create new accounts every time :-(
I am also having crashing problems, similar to above. First time I ran it, worked fine. Any subsequent times, crashes! Any ideas?

Wow, that helped for me. Renaming the AVI -folder. Though the game did not start once before this operation, hanged straight to the opening movie. I'm running with vista ultimate 64-bit.
Thanks !

What did you rename the folder. I have the same problem and when I renamed the folder the game just skipped the first cut scene.
