For starters, the game has a very good atmosphere. Somewhat of a Stalker'ish feel. The game itself plays like a turn based game with battles occuring like the random Final Fantasy random battle style. You walk around the game world and sometimes get caught up in these battles. They aren't random but you never see them coming so moving around a new area is always a bit tense!
As said before, the battles are turn based. You get the first turn to move your men around and use their weapons. The fighting is alot like Chess in a sense. For example, you pistol can only fire in four directions while the assault rifle can also fire diagonally. This kinda feels unrealistic of course, but it adds to the strategic element. Hitting the enemy in the flank or rear also adds more damage, again making the game a bit more tactical.
The graphics are pretty good. The characters are pretty low polygon but the hand drawn enviromnents are great. You may have some problems getting the game to run due to codec problems but I've managed to solve them quite easily. I'm sure GoG-team will issue a better fix for all the other people someday.
Now for the bad; the game is very very hard. Ammo is extremely scarce and you will need to resort to melee weapons in order to conserve it. While this adds some intensity and challenge it also makes it possible to completely screw yourself over early in the game if you use up all your rifle rounds or waste that precious "missile" on a useless enemy.
The "random" fights can be quite annoying as well since you never know you are walking into a mutant death trap and haven't found more quality weapons in order to win that fight. The beginning area for example is quite open, you go into different directions from your starting position. But sometimes you really need to have visited point A first because there you can find weapons you need if you ever want to have a chance against the enemy at point B.
In conclusion : A fun game but the difficulty may scare some people away (and this is coming from someone who loves hard games!). You may need to replay the beginning a few parts to really get the hang of it. Still a recommeded though! And for six bucks, you don't have anything to lose, right? :)
Let's talk about difficulty... if you are not familiar with turn based games, this game might be hard... if you ever played one or two games with turn based combat system and you make use of all your weapons, it shouldn't.
Tranquilizing weapons like the tranquilizer or stun grenade are essential, while the enemy is stunned you can attack it with close combat weapons, which do not need ammo... You also should use weapons like the flamer, it can deal damage to more than one enemy and sets enemies in flame which will deal extra damage some rounds, best thing: it only needs to recharge! No Ammo needed. Often there are barrels on the battlefield which will explode if you shoot at them: make use of them! You also should kill enemies in a specific order, depending on the situation. You should focus your three main characters on some specific weapons, they will get faster high Weapon LVL, will do more damage and will have more range! Last hint: save often! Keep that in mind and you will see the end in approx. 6h depending on how good you are. Maybe even faster. The game is really not that hard.
I won't spoiler but the ending is disappointing in my opinion.
Still it is a good game, give it a try! Sorry for my bad english :)
I'm afraid that the game is sometimes hard in a bad way. The game's linearity is quite a deal breaker, especially with limited resources. Without the classic abilities to grind monsters for experience and buy and sell items, any mistake that you make can potentially lead to an unwinnable game.
There was one moment when one of my party members had only 7 HP left and had no healing items left, and then there was an ambush later on that specifically targeted her in the beginning of the battle. She got poisoned, lost 20 HP, and I lost the game. From what I've read, antidotes won't work and a following cutscene would kill her off anyways. I stopped playing after that. I had other saved games, but my heart wasn't into it. I was going to lose two good characters.
While limited resources goes great with the survival horror aspect, it's surprisingly hard to use your equipment carefully. For instance, I would end up wasting a tranquilizer dart or napalm on an immune monster when I first encounter them. How was I suppose to know they were immune other than reload a saved game? Some of your party members will also leave the group and take their items with them, so you better reload your last save and strip them bare.
Also, there is not excuse for allowing the player to shoot at an empty space with a normal bullet. I wasted a few ammunition by accident with this incident.

There is no doubt that the game is difficult. It can as SockPuppet pointed out come to the point where it is no longer fun to save and constantly reload if one false move is made or an item get used needlessly.
For me though, GOG's lack of response to fixing the graphic issue breaks the game totally and sucks all the fun out of even having it loaded on the hard drive.
It is like a one two punch; hard game and crashes due to issues. In the end Gorky 17 is a great game that was a waste of money.
Just completed it. Apart from the first 10 encounters or so I didn't find it all that hard. I think I ended with about 15+ healing items ( all being +35hp or more). Also I didn't know the rechargeable flamer found in the beginning didn't need any ammo so I didn't use that one for quite a long time. If you take full advantage of tranquilizers the game becomes fairly easy, I would imagine a game without the use of such weapons would probably be very difficult though
I think it's fair to say that this is part adventure and part puzzle game as well as as strategy game. You really have to think about where to go and when and need to search for items everywhere as well as battle the monsters.
Some space games, like Heamongia (sic) on this site are similar, in that each mission is as much a puzzle as a strategy based battle.

Limited resources... really if you use, flamer, tranquilizer, grenades and close combat weapons wisely there should really be no problem :/ I had lots of ammuniton, weapons and medkits left when the game suddenly was over...
You are right. It is quite unfair that some party members just leave without any hint before... only way not to loose any equipment is to reload an older saved game.
yeah, this game is very challenging indeed but It's pretty rewarding as well

the game is definitely flawed but i think it still holds up pretty well, even today and its really enjoyable
